You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you write a whole little story about yourself.

СЕБЕ́ sounds «сибе́»: the Е before the stress sounds like a short «и».

- о себе́ – say it as one word: «асибе́».

- Guess who. One reads somebody else's «О себе́» without the name – the others guess who it is. 🤔
- Где? Name a city – the others say «Я живу́ в …-е»: Ло́ндон → «в Ло́ндоне!» · Москва́ → «в Москве́!» · Пари́ж → «в Пари́же!»

My name is Scuffles. I'm a cat. How old am I? That's a secret! I live «в Ло́ндон»… (Scuffles's mistake: where? – в Ло́ндоне) – «В Ло́ндоне», Scuffles! – I live in London with Natasha and Richard. The cat Slinky lives with me – my friend. And in the tank live the fish – I love to look at them. I love cheese, the high wardrobe and the warm radiator. I'm learning Russian: I sit in every lesson and make all the mistakes – so that you don't make them! My dream is a fridge full of cheese.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
In English you write «About me» on a website; in Russian – «О себе́». The same seven parts work for a job form, a dating site, a pen-friend letter or the first lesson with a new teacher. Keep your «О себе́» – you will use it for years. 📄

- Writing from a model. Students write better when they first read a short model and see its parts – the opening, the body, the closing (Hyland 2003, genre-based writing).
- Write about yourself. Personal, true writing is remembered best – the student uses the language for their own life (Swain 1985, the output hypothesis).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
