День 37 из 40: Как переводи́ть?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – перево́д, переводи́ть, перево́дчик.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: переводи́ть – «Я перевожу́ посло́вицу на англи́йский» – I translate
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 36: the motto of the course – in Russian and in your language:
«Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь.» 🐢 – how did you say it? 🌍
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you see that there are three ways to translate it – and only two are good.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: one hand on the left (Russian), the other on the right (your language) – move a word across like a ball ⚽ – пере- = across (Курс 3!).
- переводи́ть = пере- (across) + води́ть (to lead) – to lead a word across into another language.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
перево́д – a translation: move a word from one hand to the other ⚽ · перево́дчик – a translator: two hands, two languages 🤝
👂 Listen first. Move the word across ⚽ on every translation.
- Ри́чард (looking out of the window): It's raining cats and dogs! 🌧️
Ска́ффлз (shocked): Идёт дождь из ко́шек и соба́к?! 😱
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Не сло́во в сло́во. По-ру́сски: «Льёт как из ведра́!» (Курс 3, День 23) 🪣
Ска́ффлз: Хорошо́. Ко́шки с не́ба не па́дают. 😼
- Ри́чард: А «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» – э́то «Slow and steady wins the race». 📒🐢
Сли́нки смо́трит в окно́ на дождь. Ни одно́й ко́шки. 😺
★ Three ways to translate – 30 seconds.
| way | «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» |
|---|---|
| ❌ word for word | Quieter you drive – further you will be. |
| ✔ the meaning | If you go slowly, you get further. |
| ✔✔ your language's own saying | Slow and steady wins the race. 🐢 |
- Translate the meaning, not the words. Look for your language's own way of saying it.
- False friends – they look the same, but mean something else: магази́н = a shop (not a magazine) · фами́лия = a surname (not a family) · симпати́чный = nice-looking (not sympathetic) · аккура́тный = neat (not accurate) · арти́ст = a performer, an actor (not a painter).
- Names stay: Ска́ффлз stays Scuffles. 😼
🌱 The seed of the day: a good translator understands first – then says it the way her own language would. Tomorrow you translate proverbs – into your language. 🌍
Say every line aloud – move the word across ⚽.
Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь. 🐢
Не сло́во в сло́во – а смысл! ✔
Льёт как из ведра́! 🪣🌧️
Я перевожу́ на англи́йский язы́к. 🌍
- Translate «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» into your language three ways: word for word ❌, the meaning ✔, your own saying ✔✔. 🌍
- Find one false friend between Russian and your language. 🤔
- Speaking is optional – writing counts too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ПЕРЕВО́Д sounds «пиривот»: Д at the end sounds Т (like В = Ф, День 6; З = С, День 9).
- перево́д «пиривот» · сад «сат» · го́род «го́рат» · Новгоро́д «новгарот».
- The two Е before the stress are weak – «пи-ри-».
- Clap on the loud syllable: пе-ре-ВО́Д 👏 · пе-ре-во-ДИ́ТЬ 👏 · пе-ре-ВО́Д-чик 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning say a Russian proverb you love – and think how it sounds in your language: «Век живи́ – век учи́сь.» 📚🌍
That is the first minute of День 38. You already know it – so День 38 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 38 · Перево́дим посло́вицы ▶
- Word for word – or meaning? One says a word-for-word translation – the others give the real one: «Quieter you drive…» – «Slow and steady wins the race!» 🐢
- False friends. One says a Russian word – the others say what it really means: «магази́н!» – «a shop!» · «фами́лия!» – «a surname!» 🤔
- Pass the word. Throw a ball ⚽: whoever catches it translates a word into another language – English, French, your own…
The motto of «Аэро́бика ру́сского языка́» (Курс 1). Its English page Slow and steady wins the race shows the same proverb in other languages – and the list of all its language pages. This is how WikiTranslate works: one idea, a page in every language. 🌍
Translators are the post-horses of enlightenment.
Pushkin's words (1830): translators carry ideas from one country to another, like horses carried the post. And you are becoming one! 🐎✉️ 🤸 Gesture: gallop on the spot with a letter in your hand.
Read aloud – then translate the meaning, not the words. 🌍 ✋
🙌 Today's words: ПЕРЕВО́Д · ПЕРЕВОДИ́ТЬ · ПЕРЕВО́ДЧИК
Льёт как из ведра́. – (It's raining cats and dogs.)
Сло́во не воробе́й: вы́летит – не пойма́ешь. – (Курс 3! In English? …)
У́тро ве́чера мудрене́е. – (Курс 2! In English? …)
Не всё то зо́лото, что блести́т. – (Курс 2! In English? …)
English: «Once said, a word can't be taken back» · «Sleep on it» · «All that glitters is not gold». ✔✔
сло́во – a word · сло́во в сло́во – word for word · слова́рь – a dictionary 📖
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
It's raining cats and dogs! – Идёт дождь из ко́шек и соба́к?! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Не сло́во в сло́во. По-ру́сски: «Льёт как из ведра́!» – Хорошо́. Ко́шки с не́ба не па́дают. – А «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» – э́то «Slow and steady wins the race». Сли́нки смо́трит в окно́ на дождь. Ни одно́й ко́шки.
It's raining cats and dogs! – It's raining cats and dogs?! (Scuffles's mistake: word for word) – No, Scuffles! Not word for word. In Russian: «It's pouring as if from a bucket!» – All right. Cats don't fall from the sky. – And «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» is «Slow and steady wins the race». Slinky looks out of the window at the rain. Not a single cat.
- ★ Three ways: ❌ word for word · ✔ the meaning · ✔✔ your language's own saying.
- False friends: магази́н, фами́лия, симпати́чный, аккура́тный, арти́ст.
- переводи́ть на + language: на англи́йский, на ру́сский.
- Names stay names.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Russian translators made Shakespeare, Dickens and Harry Potter Russian – and English translators made Tolstoy and Chekhov English. Some translations are so good they became part of the language: the Russian «Ви́нни-Пух» is loved more in Russia than the English Pooh! 🐻
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Translation as learning. Comparing two languages makes the learner notice how each one says things – used well, translation is a strong learning tool (Cook 2010, Translation in Language Teaching).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
