★ Как сде́лать жест · How to make a gesture – four steps
- Смысл. The gesture shows what the word means: теа́тр – opera glasses. (Clapping is for the stress, not for a word.)
- Всегда́ тот же. The same gesture every time – in the video, on the page and in class.
- На уда́рный слог. The hand moves on the loud syllable: те-А́-тр, ЛО́Н-дон.
- Учени́к де́лает сам. The student makes it himself – watching alone helps less.

- ПОКАЖУ́ – Ж is always hard, never soft: «па-ка-жу́». · Ж всегда́ твёрдый.
- ЖЕСТ – after Ж the Е sounds like Э: «жэст». The same in жена́ – «жэна́».
- The unstressed О of по- sounds like а: «па-». Clap: по-ка-ЖУ́ 👏 · по-ка-ЖИ́-те 👏. 30 секу́нд ка́ждый день. · 30 seconds every day.

- Угада́й жест. One makes a gesture with no word – the others say the word. Who guesses makes the next one. 🤔
- Тот же жест. The teacher says a word from Курс 1–4 – everybody shows its gesture at the same moment. Are they all the same? 🙌
- Жест на уда́р. Say a long word and move the hand only on the loud syllable: ба-НА́Н 🍌 (peel it on НА́Н) · те-ле-ФО́Н 📱 (phone to your ear on ФО́Н).

- Clapping is for the stress; a gesture is for the meaning.
ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «show» never changes. Russian says показа́ть – but «I'll show» is покажу́: the З turns into Ж! And a good gesture needs no language at all – Slinky understood «мышь» at once. 🐭😹

- Make it yourself. Learners who made a gesture for a new word remembered it better than learners who only saw a picture: Mayer et al. 2015.
- A gesture that shows the meaning. A gesture that matches the meaning helps a new word; one that doesn't match helps much less: Kelly · McDevitt · Esch 2009.
- The same gesture every time. One word – one gesture, like one word – one picture: the memory gets the same signal again and again.
- The cat makes the mistake. Scuffles says «показу́» – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
