День 33 из 40: Почему́? – Потому́ что…
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – почему́, потому́ что, голо́дный.
💬 Long sentence of the day: Почему́…? – Потому́ что + a whole sentence: «Потому́ что она́ съе́ла сыр.»
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 32: «Почему́ вы у́чите ру́сский?» – say your answer: «Потому́ что…» 💬 (Any answer is good: «Потому́ что я люблю́ Росси́ю», «Потому́ что э́то интере́сно», «Потому́ что моя́ ба́бушка ру́сская»…)
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap and listen. Show it: почему́? – both palms up, a shrug 🤷 · потому́ что – point forward: «here is the reason!» 👉
- A question with почему́ – an answer with потому́ что + a whole sentence.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a picture – the dictionary opens.
👉 Я не ем, потому́ что я съе́ла сыр. (sentence 1 + sentence 2)
👂 Listen first. Palms up on «почему́», point forward on «потому́ что».
- Ри́чард: (with an empty plate) Где мой сыр?! 😱
🌱 The seed of the day: «Потому́ что…» – your first long sentence. And «лежа́л на столе́» – a position verb from День 2! 😹
Say every line aloud with the gestures. 🤷👉
Почему́ ты не ешь? 🤷
Потому́ что я съе́ла сыр. 👉🧀
Я не голо́дная. 😼
Почему́ ты съе́ла сыр? – Потому́ что он лежа́л на столе́!
- Answer: «Почему́ вы у́чите ру́сский?» – «Потому́ что…» 💬
- «Почему́ вы не еди́те?» – «Потому́ что я не голо́дный / голо́дная.» 🙂
- Ask somebody at home a «почему́?» question – and wait for «потому́ что». 🤷👉
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A question or a reason? 🤷👉
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
потому́ что – you write ЧТО, you say «што»: «пата-му́-што». 🤫
- The same in что (what) – «што». But in почему́ you hear Ч: «па-чи-му́».
- Say it fast, like Russians: «патамушта» – one word! 😄
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow: е́сли – «if». Look out of the window and say: «Идёт дождь.» 🌧️ or «Дождя́ нет.» ☀️ And once more: «Почему́? – Потому́ что…» 🤷👉
That is the first minute of День 34. You already know it – so День 34 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 34 · Е́сли пойдёт дождь… ▶
- Почему́ – потому́ что. One asks with palms up 🤷: «Почему́ ты спишь?» – the next answers, pointing forward 👉: «Потому́ что я уста́л(а)!» – and asks a new «почему́?».
- Silly reasons. The sillier the better: «Почему́ ко́шка на столе́?» – «Потому́ что там сыр!» · «Почему́ Ри́чард бежи́т?» – «Потому́ что Ска́ффлз съе́ла его́ сыр!» 😹
- Long sentence. Join two sentences with a clap 👏 in the middle: «Я не ем 👏 потому́ что я не голо́дный.»
There is no smoke without fire.
Everything has a reason – a «потому́ что». 🔥 Russians say it about rumours: if people talk, there is a reason. 🤸 Gesture: wave the «smoke» up with your hand… then point down at the «fire».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ПОЧЕМУ́ · ПОТОМУ́ ЧТО · ГОЛО́ДНЫЙ
Почему́ Ска́ффлз не ест?
Потому́ что она́ не голо́дная.
А почему́ она́ не голо́дная?
Потому́ что она́ съе́ла сыр Ри́чарда! 🧀😹
поэ́тому – that's why, so: «Я голо́дный, поэ́тому я ем.» 🍽️
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Ска́ффлз, за́втрак! Почему́ ты не ешь? – Почему́ я съе́ла сыр! – Не «почему́» – потому́ что! Потому́ что ты съе́ла сыр. – Да. Потому́ что я съе́ла сыр. Я не голо́дная. – А почему́ ты съе́ла сыр? – Потому́ что он лежа́л на столе́! – Где мой сыр?!
Scuffles, breakfast! Why aren't you eating? – Why I ate the cheese! (Scuffles's mistake) – Not «why» – «because»! Because you ate the cheese. – Yes. Because I ate the cheese. I'm not hungry. – And why did you eat the cheese? – Because it was lying on the table! – Where is my cheese?!
- Почему́? – why? (a question)
- Потому́ что + a whole sentence – because
- sentence + , потому́ что + sentence = one long sentence
- поэ́тому – that's why, so
- ЧТО sounds «што»
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «because» = by cause. Russian потому́ что is built the same way: по (by) + тому́ (that) + что (what). Two languages, one idea! And a child's endless «Why? Why? Why?» is in Russian «Почему́? Почему́? Почему́?» – a child who asks it is called a почему́чка. 😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Long sentences from short ones. The student already knows both halves – today only the link word is new. Small steps, one new thing at a time (Krashen 1985, i + 1).
- A real question, a real answer. «Почему́ вы у́чите ру́сский?» – the student talks about their own life; personal answers are remembered better (Rogers · Kuiper · Kirker 1977, the self-reference effect).
- Gestures for grammar words. Palms up and a pointing hand make two abstract words visible (Macedonia 2019, gestures and memory).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles answers «Почему́…» instead of «Потому́ что…» – a mistake many learners make. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
