❓ The question with «ли» – the language of tales and books
«Тепло́ ли тебе́?» = «Тебе́ тепло́?» – Are you warm?
ли goes after the word you ask about: Тепло́ ли? · Зна́ешь ли ты…? · Чита́л ли ты э́ту ска́зку?
Only in the question – the answer has no ли: «Тепло́!»
In tales and books – ли. At home – just the voice going up: «Тебе́ тепло́?» ↗️
🌱 The seed of the day: ли makes a book question. And the names of tales are dear names: Моро́з → Моро́зко → Моро́зушко (-ко, -ушко, as -ушк- in Курс 3).

МОРО́З sounds «маро́с».
- At the end of a word З sounds С: моро́з «маро́с», раз «рас», глаз «глас».
- The О before the stress sounds «а»: «ма-ро́с». But in Моро́зко the З is in the middle, before К – it sounds С too: «Маро́ска».
- Clap on the loud syllable: мо-РО́З 👏 · мо-РО́З-ко 👏 · ХО́-лод-но 👏. 30 seconds, every day.

- Моро́зко and the girl. One is Моро́зко – he stands on a chair (carefully!) and comes lower and lower: «Тепло́ ли тебе́, де́вица?» The «girl» sits on the floor and shivers: «Тепло́, Моро́зушко!» Then swap – and play the rude girl: «Ой, студено́! Уйди́!» 😄
- Warm or cold? One says a place – the others show тепло́ (hands on cheeks) or хо́лодно (rub your arms): «на ку́хне!» · «в холоди́льнике!» · «на у́лице зимо́й!» · «под одея́лом!»
- Ли questions. Throw a ball: whoever catches it asks a «ли» question and throws it on: «Зна́ешь ли ты…?»
The whole tale, as A. N. Tolstoy told it. The kind girl in the forest, Моро́зко in the trees – and the little dog under the table who always tells the truth: «Тяф, тяф!» 🐕 The bar at its top brings you back here.

Morozko came down lower: «Are you warm, maiden? Are you warm, my beauty?» – «I'm warm, dear Frost, I'm warm, father!» Scuffles is sitting in the fridge. – Are you warm, Scuffles? – Warm «ли»! (Scuffles's mistake) – Scuffles! The answer has no «ли». «Тепло́ ли?» is a question. The answer is «Warm!» or «Cold!» – Cold, dear Frost! Close the fridge! Richard closes the fridge. Slinky is sitting by the radiator. She is warm.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
«Моро́зко» is the grandfather of Дед Моро́з – Father Frost, the Russian Santa Claus. He comes at New Year (not Christmas), with his granddaughter Снегу́рочка (the Snow Maiden). ❄️🎅

- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A whole real text. A tale the student already knows the shape of is input they can understand and enjoy, even with unknown words (Krashen 1985, comprehensible input). The word list is folded – the student opens it only when stuck.
- Read for the story. Readers who guess from the story and skip a few words read more and learn more words on the way (Nation 2013).
- Repetition inside the tale. Tales repeat the same line three times with one thing changed – spaced retrieval inside a story (Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025); a line with a rhythm is remembered whole (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
