День 21 из 40: Воро́на и Лиси́ца
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – воро́на, лиси́ца, лесть.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: «Спой, све́тик, не стыди́сь!» – спой = sing! (петь → спеть)
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 20: cheese in your «beak» 🧀, caw:
«Кар-р-р!» – and the title: «Воро́на и Лиси́ца».
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today: the most famous Russian fable – and there is cheese in it. 😼
- Tap and listen. Then do it: hold a little piece in your fingers 🤏🧀 – look up, thankful.
- кусо́чек сы́ру – a little piece of cheese. сы́ру = сы́ра – the old «some» ending -у (День 11: ча́ю, са́хару, сы́ру).
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
лиса́ / лиси́ца – a fox: a long tail, tiptoe 🦊 · лесть – flattery: stroke the air too sweetly, a sly smile 😏 · льстец – a flatterer
👂 Listen first. Stroke the air too sweetly 😏 on every sweet word.
Ска́ффлз (high on the wardrobe, cheese in her mouth): Мя-а-а-у!
😏 How flattery sounds – the sweet little words
The fox makes every word small and sweet (-к-, -ок, -ик – Курс 3):
ше́я → ше́йка · глаза́ → гла́зки · пе́рья → пёрышки · нос → носо́к · го́лос → голосо́к · свет → све́тик
Too many sweet words = лесть (flattery). The fable's lesson: flattery is harmful – but a flatterer always finds a corner in our heart.
кусо́чек сы́ру – a piece of cheese: the old «some» -у, like ча́ю, са́хару (День 11).
🌱 The seed of the day: little sweet words can be love – or flattery. Listen to who says them, and why. 🦊
Say every line aloud – the cheese in your «beak», then «Кар!».
Воро́не где́-то Бог посла́л кусо́чек сы́ру. 🧀
Спой, све́тик, не стыди́сь! 😏
Воро́на ка́ркнула во всё воро́нье го́рло: 🐦⬛ Кар!
Сыр вы́пал – с ним была́ плуто́вка такова́. 🦊💨
- Be the fox: say three sweet words to somebody at home: «Каки́е гла́зки! Каки́е ру́чки! Како́й голосо́к!» 😏 – and see if they give you their cheese. 😄
- Then say what the fable teaches: «Лесть вредна́.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Listen how close they are:
- воро́на – a crow 🐦⬛ · во́рон – a raven (День 13) · воро́та – a gate (День 10)
- The О's before the stress sound «а»: воро́на «варо́на», воро́та «варо́та».
- Clap on the loud syllable: во-РО́-на 👏 · ВО́-рон 👏 · ли-СИ́-ца 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning make a little sail with your hand ⛵ and say Lermontov's first line: «Беле́ет па́рус одино́кий…»
That is the first minute of День 22. You already know it – so День 22 starts with a win.
- Play the fable. One is the crow on a chair with a sweet in their mouth 🍬. The fox says sweet words: «Каки́е пёрышки! Спой!» Can the crow keep her beak closed? 😄
- Sweet words. One says a word – the others make it little and sweet: нос → «носо́к!» · го́лос → «голосо́к!» · глаз → «гла́зки!» · рука́ → «ру́чка!»
- Ворона, во́рон, воро́та. One says a word – the others show: a crow 🐦⬛ (hands like a beak), a raven (a big, deep «кра!»), a gate (open your arms).
The whole fable – Krylov is free to read (he died in 1844). A page with the whole text and an English translation comes later; until then, the most famous lines are in the box above. 🦊🐦⬛
Even a cat likes a kind word.
Kind words are good – everybody likes them, even a cat. But kind words are not the same as лесть: kind words give, flattery takes. 🐈 🤸 Gesture: stroke a cat on your lap, it purrs.
Read the fox's sweet words aloud – too sweetly! 😏 ✋
🙌 Today's words: ВОРО́НА · ЛИСИ́ЦА · ЛЕСТЬ
«Голу́бушка, как хороша́!
Ну что за ше́йка, что за гла́зки!
Каки́е пёрышки! како́й носо́к!
Спой, све́тик, не стыди́сь!»
Count the little sweet words: голу́бушка, ше́йка, гла́зки, пёрышки, носо́к, све́тик – six! 😏
лиса́ – a fox · лиси́ца – a fox (the tale word) · лисёнок – a fox cub (-ёнок, Курс 3) · Лиса́ Патрике́евна – the fox's name in folk tales 🦊
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Scuffles, how beautiful you are! What lovely little eyes you have! What little ears! Sing! – Miaow-w-w! The cheese falls. Slinky is below and eats the cheese. – Slinky is our fox! – They sent me a little piece of «сыр»… (Scuffles's mistake: a piece of – genitive) – «Кусо́чек сы́ру», Scuffles – like in the fable! Or «кусо́чек сы́ра». – Even a cat likes a kind word – but the cheese is gone!
- кусо́чек сы́ру / сы́ра – a piece of: genitive (День 11).
- Flattery = small sweet words: ше́йка, гла́зки, пёрышки, носо́к, голосо́к.
- A fable (ба́сня, День 14) – here the moral comes first.
- спой! – sing! (спеть ✅) · не стыди́сь! – don't be shy!
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Krylov took the story from La Fontaine (French, 1668), who took it from Aesop (Greek, 2,500 years ago). The English know it as «The Fox and the Crow». But Krylov's lines became Russian sayings: when somebody loses something because of sweet words, Russians say «Сыр вы́пал – с ним была́ плуто́вка такова́». 🧀🦊
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Poems are made to be said aloud. Rhythm and rhyme make a line easy to remember whole – the oldest memory tool there is (Rubin 1995, Memory in Oral Traditions).
- Real literature early. Short famous poems give the student the joy of reading the real thing, which keeps them going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
