🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: здра́вствовать – «Здра́вствуйте!» = «Be healthy!»
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 24: hello three ways:
«Здра́вствуйте!» 🙇 · «Приве́т!» 👋 · «Здоро́во!» 😄 – and the riddle: «Не куст, а с листо́чками…» – «Кни́га!» 📖
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today: when to say which. 🎭
- Tap and listen. Then do it: Здра́вствуйте! – a little bow 🙇 · Приве́т! – a wave 👋 · Здоро́во! – a friendly slap on somebody's shoulder 😄.
- Three ways to say hello – three styles. The words are different because the people are different.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
до свида́ния – goodbye (formal): a little bow 🙇 · быва́й – see ya (very friendly): a thumbs up 👍
👂 Listen first. Bow 🙇, wave 👋 or slap a shoulder 😄 on every hello.
- Ри́чард: Ната́ша, к нам гость! 🚪
Ска́ффлз (runs to the door): Здоро́во! 😄
- Ната́ша: Ска́ффлз! Гость – незнако́мый челове́к. Здра́вствуйте! 🙇
Ска́ффлз (to Slinky, a deep bow): Здра́вствуйте, Сли́нки! 🙇
- Ната́ша: А Сли́нки – твоя́ подру́га! Ей – приве́т! 😄👋
Ска́ффлз: Приве́т, Сли́нки! –
Сли́нки: Мя́у. (= Приве́т!) 😺
★ Three styles of Russian – 30 seconds.
| 🙇 formal | 👋 everyday | 😄 very friendly |
|---|---|---|
| Здра́вствуйте! | Приве́т! | Здоро́во! |
| До свида́ния! | Пока́! | Быва́й! |
| Спаси́бо большо́е! | Спаси́бо! | Спаси́бки! |
| вы · a stranger, a teacher, a doctor, an older person | ты · a friend, family | ты · an old friend (mostly men) |
- здоро́во 😄 (hello!) and здо́рово 👍 (great!) – the same letters, the stress decides.
- Not sure? Say Здра́вствуйте – too polite is never wrong; too friendly can be.
🌱 The seed of the day: Russian has three voices: for the boss, for a friend, for a best friend. Tomorrow – the same with names.
Say every line aloud – with the bow, the wave, the slap on the shoulder.
Здра́вствуйте! 🙇 – До свида́ния! 🙇
Приве́т! 👋 – Пока́! 👋
Здоро́во! 😄 – Быва́й! 👍
Не зна́ешь? Говори́ «Здра́вствуйте»! 🙇
- Say hello to everybody at home – in the right style: the cat 😺, your partner, a picture of the King 👑, your best friend on the phone.
- What do you say to a doctor? To a child? To your granny? «Здра́вствуйте, до́ктор!» · «Приве́т, ма́ленький!» · «Здра́вствуй, ба́бушка!»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Who is it – what style? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЗДРА́ВСТВУЙТЕ – the first В is not said: «здра́ствуйте». Russians say it fast: even «здра́сьте»! 😄
- Silent letters: здра́вствуйте «здра́ствуйте» · со́лнце «со́нце» · се́рдце «се́рце» · чу́вство «чу́ство».
- здоро́во (hello) – the stress on РО́ · здо́рово (great) – the stress on ЗДО́.
- Clap on the loud syllable: ЗДРА́-ствуй-те 👏 · при-ВЕ́Т 👏 · здо-РО́-во 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning say Natasha's name three ways – officially, everyday and very lovingly: «Ната́лья» · «Ната́ша» · «Ната́шенька» 🙇👋❤️
That is the first minute of День 26. You already know it – so День 26 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 26 · Ната́лья – Ната́ша – Ната́шенька ▶
- Who are you? One person plays a role – a doctor 🩺, a child 🧒, an old friend 🍻, the King 👑. The others greet them in the right style – with the right gesture.
- Hello – goodbye. One says a hello – the others say the goodbye in the same style: «Здра́вствуйте!» – «До свида́ния!» · «Приве́т!» – «Пока́!» · «Здоро́во!» – «Быва́й!»
- Здоро́во or здо́рово? One says the word – the others slap a shoulder 😄 (hello) or show a thumbs up 👍 (great).
The first word is worth more than the second.
How you start is how it goes – the first «hello» matters most. 🙇 🤸 Gesture: one finger up «пе́рвое», then a small, less important second finger.
Read every little dialogue aloud – in the right voice. 🎭 ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Ната́ша, к нам гость! – Здоро́во! – Ска́ффлз! Гость – незнако́мый челове́к. Здра́вствуйте! – Здра́вствуйте, Сли́нки! – А Сли́нки – твоя́ подру́га! Ей – приве́т! – Приве́т, Сли́нки! – Мя́у.
Natasha, we have a guest! – Hiya! (Scuffles's mistake: too friendly) – Scuffles! A guest is a stranger. «Здра́вствуйте!» – Good day, Slinky! (too formal) – But Slinky is your friend! Say «Приве́т!» to her! – Hi, Slinky! – Miaow.
- ★ Three styles: 🙇 formal – 👋 everyday – 😄 very friendly.
- Здра́вствуйте / до свида́ния · Приве́т / пока́ · Здоро́во / быва́й.
- вы with «здра́вствуйте», ты with «приве́т».
- здоро́во (hello) ≠ здо́рово (great).
- Not sure? – Здра́вствуйте.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has the same three: «Good morning» 🙇 · «Hi» 👋 · «Hiya / Wotcha» 😄. But Russian «Здра́вствуйте» is long and hard – even Russians say «здра́сьте». And it means «be healthy!» – like the old English «Hail!» (= be whole, be healthy). 🙇
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Style is part of meaning. Knowing which word fits which person and place (sociolinguistic competence) is one of the main parts of real language skill (Canale · Swain 1980).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
