- Careful: a story that sounds right is not always true – «под у́шко» is the most famous wrong one. 🔍

ВРАЧ – the last sound Ч is always soft, like English «ch» in «church».
- врач · мяч · ключ · ночь – the Ь after Ч changes nothing in the sound.
- ВР at the start – two sounds together: «вр-ач», no vowel between.
- Clap on the loud syllable: не-ДЕ́-ля 👏 · ВРАЧ 👏 · по-ДУ́Ш-ка 👏. 30 seconds, every day.

A pillow – that's «под у́шко», «under the little ear»! Under my little ear! (Scuffles's mistake: a famous folk story, not true) – Everybody thinks so – but no! Scholars say: поду́шка comes from «дух», «дуть» – soft, full of air. – But my little ear is on the pillow anyway! – And «спаси́бо»? – «Спаси́ Бог» – God save you. – And «неде́ля» is не + де́лать. Sunday is the day when people don't work. And Monday comes after it! Slinky is asleep. For her every day is a неде́ля.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has the same tricks: goodbye = «God be with ye» – just like спаси́бо = «спаси́ Бог»! And Monday = «Moon day», like понеде́льник is «after-Sunday». The stories are different, the idea is the same: old words hide inside new ones. 🔍

- Checked stories only. Every story here is checked in Vasmer's etymological dictionary; the famous wrong one (под у́шко) is shown as wrong (word-origins.md).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
