Your homework from День 29: one aerobics move 🤸:
«Аэро́бика ру́сского языка́!» – one word from Greek, one Russian. 🌍
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today: the words Russian took from the world – and gave to it.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: one aerobics move 🤸 on «аэро́бика», hand on your heart on «ру́сского».
- The name of Natasha's way of teaching: one word came from Greek (through English), two are Russian. Russian is full of words from other languages – and English has Russian words too. 🌍
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
аэро́бика – aerobics: arms up and down 🤸 · компью́тер – type on a keyboard ⌨️
👂 Listen first. Stamp your foot ✋ on every word that does not change.
Ска́ффлз (with a little bag): Я е́ду на метре́! 🚇
🌍 Words from other languages
- French: кафе́, метро́, такси́, пальто́, пляж, шофёр · English: компью́тер, футбо́л, спорт, лайк, ча́титься · Italian: пи́цца, спаге́тти · Dutch: ко́фе · Greek: аэро́бика, тео́рия · German: бутербро́д (bread + butter!), шлагба́ум.
- ✋ Words on -о, -е, -и, -у from other languages do not change: в кафе́, на метро́, без пальто́, в такси́, в меню́.
- ко́фе is он: чёрный ко́фе (in speech many say «чёрное» – but «чёрный» is right).
- Russian words in English: sputnik (спу́тник – a travel companion!), babushka, matryoshka, tsar (царь), steppe (степь).
🌱 The seed of the day: a word from abroad that ends in -о, -е, -и never changes – easy! And the story of our course: «Аэро́бика ру́сского языка́» – a Greek-English word for moving + the Russian language.
Say every line aloud – stamp ✋ on every word that does not change.
Я е́ду на метро́. ✋🚇
Я сижу́ в кафе́. ✋☕
Я пью чёрный ко́фе. ☕
Аэро́бика ру́сского языка́! 🤸
- Find five words from other languages in your kitchen – say them in Russian: «ко́фе, пи́цца, тост, ке́тчуп, йо́гурт…» ☕🍕
- Say where you go – the words don't change: «Я иду́ в кафе́. Я е́ду на такси́.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Does it change? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
In many words from other languages Е after a consonant sounds «э» – the consonant stays hard:
- кафе́ «кафэ́» · компью́тер «компью́тэр» · те́ннис «тэ́ннис» · интерне́т «интэрнэ́т».
- But in old Russian words it is soft: неде́ля «нидЕ́ля» (День 29).
- Clap on the loud syllable: а-э-РО́-би-ка 👏 · ком-ПЬЮ́-тер 👏 · мет-РО́ 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning tell your cat (or a toy) «No!» – and watch it go on eating. Then say Krylov's famous line: «А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест.» 🐈🍗
That is the first minute of День 31. You already know it – so День 31 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 31 · А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест ▶
- Where is it from? One says a word – the others point on a map 🗺️: «кафе́!» – France 🇫🇷 · «пи́цца!» – Italy 🇮🇹 · «компью́тер!» – England 🇬🇧 · «бутербро́д!» – Germany 🇩🇪.
- Change or not? One says «в» + a word – the others say the right form, stamping ✋ if it does not change: «в кафе́!» ✋ · «в ко́мнате!» · «в метро́!» ✋ · «в шко́ле!»
- Our course names. Say them in a row with gestures: «Встаём на но́ги!» (stand up) – «Начина́ем дви́гаться!» (walk) – «Расправля́ем кры́лья!» (arms out) – «Высоко́ сиди́м!» (sit high) 🤸
Don't go into another's monastery with your own rules.
The Russian «When in Rome, do as the Romans do». A word that comes into Russian follows Russian rules – or keeps its own, like метро́. 😉 🤸 Gesture: knock on a door, bow, and leave your bag outside.
Read aloud – find the words from other languages. 🌍 ✋
🙌 Today's words:
спу́тник – a satellite; a travel companion · путь – a way · путеше́ствие – a journey · попу́тчик – a fellow traveller
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Я е́ду на метре́! – На метро́, Ска́ффлз! Метро́ не меня́ется: в метро́, на метро́, без метро́. – Я е́ду на метро́ в кафе́! Там ко́фе и сыр! – Ко́шки не пьют ко́фе. – Ко́фе – тебе́. Сыр – мне! Сли́нки сиди́т в коро́бке. Ей не ну́жно ни метро́, ни такси́.
I'm going «на метре́»! (Scuffles's mistake: метро́ never changes) – «На метро́», Scuffles! Метро́ doesn't change: in the metro, by metro, without the metro. – I'm going by metro to a café! There's coffee and cheese there! – Cats don't drink coffee. – Coffee for you. Cheese for me! Slinky is sitting in a box. She needs neither the metro nor a taxi.
- Words from abroad on -о, -е, -и, -у do not change: в кафе́, на метро́, без пальто́, в такси́, в меню́.
- ко́фе – он: чёрный ко́фе.
- In foreign words Е often sounds «э»: кафе́ «кафэ́».
- Russian in English: sputnik, babushka, matryoshka, tsar, steppe.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
The English word «sputnik» came in 1957, when Russia sent the first satellite into space. In Russian «спу́тник» is an old word – «с + путь» = somebody who goes the same way as you, a travel companion. So the first satellite was «the Earth's travel companion». 🛰️
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Known words are free words. Borrowed words (кафе́, компью́тер) are words the student already half knows – noticing them makes reading feel easier at once (Nation 2013, cognates).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
