День 31 из 40: А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – крыла́тые слова́, по́вар, да (= и).
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: есть – «А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест» – he eats
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 30: tell a cat (or a toy) «No!» – it goes on eating:
«А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест.» 🐈🍗
You remembered it – that is your first win today. You already said a line by Krylov – like every Russian does at home.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: a hand behind your ear 👂 on «слу́шает» – and chew, chew, chew 😋 on «ест».
- да here = и (and) – old, spoken Russian. Russians say this line about anybody who hears «no» and goes on doing it.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
по́вар – a cook: stir a big pot 🍲 · крыла́тые слова́ – «winged words»: flap your arms like wings, then open a book 📖🕊️ (крыло́ – a wing, Курс 3!)
👂 Listen first. Wag a finger ☝️ for Natasha – chew 😋 for Scuffles.
- Ната́ша (a finger wagging): Ска́ффлз! Нельзя́! Э́то сыр Ри́чарда! Ско́лько раз я говори́ла… ☝️
Ска́ффлз (still eating): А Ска́ффлз слу́шает да ем! 😋
- Ната́ша: Да ест, Ска́ффлз! Ска́ффлз – она́: она́ слу́шает да ест. 😄
- Ри́чард: Ну вот. Ва́ська! 📒 – Ната́ша: Не говори́ – де́лай! (She takes the cheese away.) 🧀
Сли́нки слу́шает – и не ест. Послу́шная ко́шка! (День 5) 😺
🕊️ Крыла́тые слова́ – winged words
Lines from books that «flew» into everyday speech. Russians use them like proverbs – and expect you to know where they come from:
🐈 «А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест» – he doesn't listen (Krylov, «Кот и По́вар»)
🐘 «Слона́-то я и не приме́тил» – I didn't see the most important thing (Krylov, «Любопы́тный»)
📦 «А ла́рчик про́сто открыва́лся» – the answer was simple (Krylov, «Ла́рчик»)
💃 «Ты всё пе́ла? Э́то де́ло: так пойди́ же, попляши́!» – you played all summer, now it's your problem (Krylov, «Стрекоза́ и Мураве́й»)
⏰ «Счастли́вые часо́в не наблюда́ют» – happy people don't watch the clock (Griboyedov, «Го́ре от ума́», 1824)
🧀 «Сыр вы́пал – с ним была́ плуто́вка такова́» (День 21!)
🌱 The seed of the day: Russians speak in quotations – Krylov above all. Know ten winged words, and you understand half the jokes at a Russian table. 😄
Say every winged word aloud – with its gesture.
А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест. 👂😋
Слона́-то я и не приме́тил! 🐘🙈
А ла́рчик про́сто открыва́лся! 📦👐
Счастли́вые часо́в не наблюда́ют. ⏰❤️
- Use a winged word today: somebody doesn't listen – «А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест!» · you can't find your glasses – they are on your head – «Слона́-то я и не приме́тил!» 👓
- Which one do you like best? Learn it by heart.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Which winged word fits? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЕСТ sounds «йест»: at the start of a word Е = Й + Е (like after a vowel, День 22).
- ест «йест» · е́сли «йе́сли» · ель «йель» (День 9).
- Ва́ська – С before К stays С; the soft sign makes it soft: «ва́сь-ка».
- Clap on the loud syllable: а ВА́СЬ-ка СЛУ́-ша-ет да ЕСТ 👏👏👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow is a review day. Say «hello» in three styles once more – «Здра́вствуйте!» 🙇 · «Приве́т!» 👋 · «Здоро́во!» 😄 – and tell the riddle (in Part 2) to someone at home.
That is the first minute of День 32. You already know it – so День 32 starts with a win.
- Play «Кот и По́вар». One is the cook – scolds for a long time ☝️. The other is Ва́ська – eats a biscuit slowly 😋. Everybody else says at the end: «А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест!» 😄
- Which winged word? Act a little scene (looking for glasses on your head 👓, a box that opens easily 📦) – the others say the winged word.
- Who wrote it? One says a winged word – the others: «Крыло́в!» (most of them 😉) or «Грибое́дов!»
The cat listens – and eats.
Natasha's rhyming form of Krylov's line (Курс 1, День 3) – tap it: its page has the words, the stress and English cousins like «in one ear and out the other». слу́шает – ку́шает: a rhyme makes it easy to say. 🐈 🤸 Gesture: a hand behind your ear, then chew.
Read the winged words aloud – then say where they come from. ✋
🙌 Today's words: КРЫЛА́ТЫЕ СЛОВА́ · ПО́ВАР · ДА (= и)
А Ва́ська слу́шает да ест. – (Крыло́в)
Слона́-то я и не приме́тил! – (Крыло́в)
А ла́рчик про́сто открыва́лся! – (Крыло́в)
Счастли́вые часо́в не наблюда́ют. – (Грибое́дов)
Сыр вы́пал – с ним была́ плуто́вка такова́. – (Крыло́в, День 21)
вари́ть – to cook, to boil · по́вар – a cook · варе́нье – jam («boiled» fruit) 🍓
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Ска́ффлз! Нельзя́! Э́то сыр Ри́чарда! Ско́лько раз я говори́ла… – А Ска́ффлз слу́шает да ем! – Да ест, Ска́ффлз! Ска́ффлз – она́: она́ слу́шает да ест. – Ну вот. Ва́ська! – Не говори́ – де́лай! Сли́нки слу́шает – и не ест. Послу́шная ко́шка!
Scuffles! No! That's Richard's cheese! How many times have I told you… – And Scuffles listens and «ем» (I eat)! (Scuffles's mistake: she – ест) – «Ест», Scuffles! Scuffles is a she: she listens and eats. – There you are. Vaska! – Don't talk – act! Slinky listens – and doesn't eat. An obedient cat!
- крыла́тые слова́ – lines from books used like proverbs. Most are Krylov's.
- да = и (old, spoken): слу́шает да ест.
- есть: я ем · ты ешь · он / она́ ест · мы еди́м · они́ едя́т (irregular!).
- Krylov's lesson: «Не говори́ – де́лай!»
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has winged words too – from Shakespeare: «To be or not to be», «All that glitters is not gold». For Russians, Krylov is what Shakespeare is for the English: people quote him without knowing they do. 🕊️📖
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Quotations are culture. Knowing the famous lines of a language helps to understand its jokes, headlines and talk – part of real cultural competence (Byram 1997, intercultural communicative competence).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
