Not sure? Choose the polite style. 🙇

ударе́ние⁠ – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН⁠ – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н⁠ – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?

In one week you learned what most textbooks never teach: which Russian to use with whom. Russians notice it at once – a foreigner who says «Здра́вствуйте» to a doctor and «Приве́т» to a friend sounds like one of them. 💪🎭

A review day with no new words. Words met again after a gap of a few days are remembered much better than words met many times in one go – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
Wrong and right side by side. Seeing the wrong-style letter next to the right one makes the difference visible (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
Remember first, then check. Reading a week's words alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
A riddle at the end. A riddle makes the student guess before the answer – guessing first, even wrongly, helps the answer stay (Kornell, Hays · Bjork 2009, the pretesting effect).
The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles writes to the vet like to a friend. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
