📖 В кни́ге · in a book
Ма́ша и медве́дь (our own short telling)

· Your turn!
  • Tell the tale the home way to somebody – with кото́рый and и. Three sentences are enough.
  • Then read one line the book way – slowly, like Natasha.
  • Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.

✔ Прове́рьте себя́ · Check yourself

Guess, then tap. Book or life? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊

5 Where do you meet «несу́щий», «уста́в» most?

in books 📖
in the shop 🛒
on the phone with friends 📱

Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: Щ and Ш

Two sounds you met this week – say them one after the other:

  • Щ – long and soft: сидя́щая, несу́щий, чита́ющий (День 2).
  • Ш – short and hard: уста́вший, съе́вший, прише́дший (День 3).
  • Clap: си-ДЯ́-ща-я 👏 · не-СУ́-щий 👏 · у-СТА́-вший 👏. Hear the difference? 30 seconds, every day.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow is a review day. Stand on a step or by a chair, look down 👇 and say one line of the tale the book way: «Ма́ша, сидя́щая в коро́бе, гляди́т све́рху.» ☝️🫡
That is the first minute of День 8. You already know it – so День 8 starts with a win.

✔ Часть 1 гото́ва! Part 1 done.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 8 · Всё ви́дно све́рху! ▶
Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. Book or life? One reads a line the book way in a grand voice 🎩 – the other answers the home way in a normal voice: «Медве́дь, несу́щий коро́б…» – «Медве́дь, кото́рый несёт коро́б…»
  2. Play the tale. One is the bear 🐻 carrying a «box» (a chair), the other is Ма́ша behind it: «Не сади́сь на пенёк, не ешь пирожо́к!» The bear jumps up – «Испу́ганный медве́дь!»
  3. Five forms, five gestures. Point at a word in the tale and show its gesture: 〰️ -ющий · 👈 -вший · 👇✅ -нный · 〰️〰️ -я · ✅👉 -в.
🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Ска́зка – ложь, да в ней намёк: до́брым мо́лодцам уро́к.

A tale is not true, but there is a hint in it – a lesson for good young men.
The last lines of Pushkin's «Ска́зка о золото́м петушке́» (1834) – now everybody says it like a proverb. A tale is not life – but it teaches about life. 🤸 Gesture: shake your finger «not true», then tap your head «but think!»

📖 Чита́йте са́ми · Read alone – guess, then tap

Read the tale in the 📖 box aloud, slowly. Then count: how many book forms did you find? ✋

гуля́вшая 👈 · уви́дев ✅👉 · сев ✅👉 · несу́щий 〰️ · уста́в ✅👉 · сидя́щая 〰️ · испу́ганный 👇✅ · поста́вив ✅👉 · вы́скочив ✅👉

жить – to live · жизнь – life · живо́й – alive · живо́тное – an animal («a living thing») 🐈

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

📖 Текст уро́ка · The text – open it only after you can say it without reading

The bear, carrying the box, walked through the forest. Having got tired, he wanted to sit down on a stump. (from the book) – The bear carried the box and walked through the forest. He got tired and wanted to sit down on a stump. (at home) – Ah! That's easier! – Natasha, give me the cheese lying in the fridge! (Scuffles's mistake: book Russian at home) – Scuffles, you talk like a book! At home people say: «Give me the cheese that's in the fridge». – Scuffles is a cat who has read a book! – Miaow!

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • 📖 Books: чита́ющий · съе́вший · прочи́танный · чита́я · прочита́в.
  • 🗣️ Life: кото́рый + verb · two verbs with и.
  • 〰️ несу́щий = кото́рый несёт · 👈 гуля́вшая = кото́рая гуля́ла · 👇✅ испу́ганный = его́ испуга́ли
  • 〰️〰️ си́дя = и сиди́т · ✅👉 уста́в = уста́л и…
  • You don't need to speak like a book – but now you can read one. 🎉
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers
A famous joke by Chekhov (1884, «Жа́лобная кни́га»): «Подъезжа́я к сие́й ста́нции и гля́дя на приро́ду в окно́, у меня́ слете́ла шля́па.» – «Coming up to this station and looking at nature through the window, my hat flew off.» Who was coming up and looking out of the window – the hat? 😄 (And look: гля́дя – День 5!) The -я word must belong to the same person. Russian teachers love this line.

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
  • A real text, a little above the student. A tale the student knows, with new forms in it, is input they can understand and enjoy (Krashen 1985, comprehensible input).
  • Two versions side by side. The book line and the home line next to each other show the difference without a long rule (Schmidt 1990, noticing).
  • Learn to recognise, not to produce. Participles and gerunds are mostly written Russian. A reader needs to recognise them fast; speaking can still use кото́рый. Receptive knowledge comes first and grows fastest with a lot of easy reading (Nation 2013, Learning Vocabulary in Another Language).
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
