- Then the home way: «Вот ко́шка, кото́рая спит на дива́не.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

Tomorrow a new part begins: whole folk tales. The first one is cold! Hug yourself, shiver 🥶 and say: «Моро́з! Хо́лодно!» – and tell the riddle (in Part 2) to someone at home.
That is the first minute of День 9. You already know it – so День 9 starts with a win.

«Всё ви́дно све́рху!» – a game for the whole family.
- One person stands on a step (carefully!) 🪑 and is the cat on the wardrobe. The others do things below: read, sleep, eat, close a door. The «cat» says it the book way: «Вот па́па, чита́ющий газе́ту! Вот закры́тая дверь!»
- Five gestures. One shows a gesture – the others say a form: 〰️ «чита́ющий!» · 👈 «прочита́вший!» · 👇✅ «прочи́танный!» · 〰️〰️ «чита́я!» · ✅👉 «прочита́в!»
- Book ↔ life. One says a book line in a grand voice 🎩, the other says it the home way.
Who sows the wind will reap the storm.
Bad deeds come back – bigger. An old saying, from the Bible; Russians use it every day. «ве́тер» – the answer to today's riddle! 🤸 Gesture: throw seeds from your hand, then make a big storm with both arms.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
In one week you learned the words that make Russian books look hard: -ющий, -вший, -нный, -я, -в. English does almost all of it with -ing and -ed. Russian has five forms – and you can now recognise every one of them. On День 9 a whole tale is waiting. 💪
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A review day with no new words. Words met again after a gap of a few days are remembered much better than words met many times in one go – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- All five forms side by side. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you see them together and notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Remember first, then check. Reading a week's words alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A riddle at the end. A riddle makes the student guess before the answer – guessing first, even wrongly, helps the answer stay (Kornell, Hays · Bjork 2009, the pretesting effect).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles forgets that «спя́щая» changes like an adjective. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
