1 Вот дом. В до́ме – лиса́. Лиса́ – э́то Ска́ффлз. 🏠 roof; 🦊 paws up like ears, a sly smile
2 Вот жура́вль. Жура́вль – э́то Сли́нки. У Сли́нки нос – о-о-о! Большо́й нос! 🐦 stand on one leg; a long nose with the hand
3 И Ри́чард тут – на сту́ле. 🪑 sit down, hands on the knees – the guest
4 Лиса́: – Жура́вль, в дом! Я угоща́ю! – Чем? – Ка́шей! 👋 come in! hand to the mouth: I treat you
5 На столе́ – таре́лка. Таре́лка с ка́шей. Лиса́ угоща́ет ка́шей. 🥣 a flat plate with the hands
6 Лиса́ ест ло́жкой. Ам! Ам! Ам! 🥄 eat fast with a spoon
7 А жура́вль ест но́сом. Нос – в таре́лку. Бах! Бах! Нет ка́ши. peck the plate with the hand: bang, bang; 🙌 empty hands
8 Лиса́: – Всё! Ка́ши нет. – Жура́вль: – Ой… Спаси́бо, лиса́. 🙌 empty hands; a sad sigh
9 Жура́вль: – Лиса́, в дом! Тепе́рь я угоща́ю! – Чем? – Ры́бой! 👋 come in! hand on the chest: my turn
10 На столе́ – кувши́н. Кувши́н с ры́бой. Кувши́н с у́зким го́рлышком. 🏺 hands: a tall jug, then a narrow neck
11 Жура́вль ест но́сом. Нос – в кувши́н. Ам! Ам! Хорошо́! the hand goes deep into the jug: yum
12 А лиса́? Ло́жка – в кувши́н? Нет! Нос – в кувши́н? Нет! Го́рлышко у́зкое! 🙅 try – no; try – no; show the narrow neck
13 Нет ры́бы. Жура́вль ел ры́бу. Лиса́ – нет. Лиса́: – Ой! Моя́ ры́ба! 🙌 empty hands; 😾 stamp
14 Ри́чард: – Ха-ха! Лиса́ – с ка́шей, жура́вль – с ры́бой, а я – с ру́чкой и с кольцо́м! 🖊💍 hold up your pen and your ring
15 Ска́ффлз: – Нет! Хочу́ ры́бу! Хочу́ ры́бу! – Ой, Ска́ффлз. 😾 paw out; sigh

The point of the tale: the same question twice – Чем? – and the answer is always the ending: угоща́ю ка́шей, угоща́ю ры́бой; ест ло́жкой, ест но́сом; таре́лка с ка́шей, кувши́н с ры́бой, кувши́н с у́зким го́рлышком. She-words say -ой / -ей (ло́жкой, ры́бой, ка́шей), he-words say -ом (но́сом, кольцо́м) – today's lesson «Руко́й, ного́й» (День 30). And the fox gets what she gave: a plate for a nose, a jug for a spoon.

🗣️ Тепе́рь вы · your turn (optional)

Take a spoon and a pen. Eat in the air: «Ем ло́жкой.» Write in the air: «Пишу́ ру́чкой.» Now treat your cat like the fox: «Я угоща́ю! Чем? Ры́бой!» – and like the crane, with a tall jug: «Кувши́н с ры́бой!»

🐈 Сли́нки, Ска́ффлз и Ри́чард · the cartoon

Roles: Scuffles = лиса́ (eats first, fast, with a spoon; gives the crane a flat plate; at the end wants the fish: «Моя́ ры́ба!») · Slinky = жура́вль (long and thin, a long nose; polite: «Спаси́бо, лиса́»; eats from the jug with her nose) · Richard = the guest on the chair (eats nothing, laughs at the end; holds up his pen and his ring like in the lesson).

  1. The fox invites the crane: «Жура́вль, в дом! Я угоща́ю! – Чем? – Ка́шей!» A flat plate. The fox eats with a spoon – ам, ам, ам; the crane pecks with the nose – бах, бах – and gets nothing. The student says «Чем? – Ка́шей!» with them.
  2. The crane invites the fox: «Лиса́, в дом! Тепе́рь я угоща́ю! – Чем? – Ры́бой!» A tall jug with a narrow neck. The crane's nose goes in – ам, ам; the fox tries the spoon – нет, the nose – нет. «Го́рлышко у́зкое!»
  3. Richard laughs and sums up with the lesson line: «Лиса́ – с ка́шей, жура́вль – с ры́бой, а я – с ру́чкой и с кольцо́м!» Scuffles stamps: «Хочу́ ры́бу!»

Scuffles' mistake (for the quiz): «Угоща́ю ка́ша! Кувши́н с ры́ба!» – Natasha: «Угоща́ю ка́шей. Кувши́н с ры́бой. Чем? – ка́шей, ры́бой, ло́жкой – listen to the end of the word.»

🎓 Для тех, кто у́чится серьёзно · the grammar inside

  • чем? – the tool: ест ло́жкой, ест но́сом, пишу́ ру́чкой – the instrumental case (lesson «Руко́й, ного́й», День 30). She-words: -а → -ой (ло́жкой, ры́бой); after ш, ж, ч, щ, ц an unstressed ending is written -ей: ка́шей (like Ната́шей). He-words and оно́-words: + -ом (но́сом, кольцо́м).
  • с + instrumental = with: таре́лка с ка́шей, кувши́н с ры́бой, я с ру́чкой и с кольцо́м. Listen to the end: с руки́ (from the hand, the ring comes off) – с ры́бой (with the fish).
  • угоща́ю / угоща́ет / угоща́ла – I treat / she treats / she treated (someone to something). The thing you treat with is чем?: угоща́ю ка́шей, угоща́ю ры́бой. In the folk tale: «Лиса́ угоща́ла журавля́ ка́шей» (журавля́ – whom, the accusative of a living thing, День 24 «ви́жу кота́»).
  • кувши́н с у́зким го́рлышком – the adjective goes with its noun: у́зкое го́рлышко → с у́зким го́рлышком (he / оно́-words: -ым / -им + -ом; the folded reference of День 30 has но́вым кольцо́м). го́рлышко = a little го́рло (neck, throat) – -ышко makes it small, like окно́ → око́шко.
  • где? – в до́ме, на сту́ле, на столе́ (-е, blue, День 25). куда́? – в дом, в таре́лку, в кувши́н (red; таре́лка → в таре́лку). нет ка́ши, нет ры́бы, у Сли́нки (purple: the genitive of «Кольца́ нет!», День 29; у + кого́? = someone has).
  • ест / ел – he (she) eats now / he ate: есть → ест, ел (День 18). хочу́ ры́бу – ры́ба → ры́бу (what I want, the accusative, seed День 4).
  • In the folk tale the fox spreads the porridge on a plate («Ку́шай, куманёк, не обессу́дь!») and licks it with her tongue (языко́м); the crane brings окро́шка in a jug with a narrow neck, and the tale ends with a proverb: «Как аукну́лось, так и откли́кнулось» – what you give is what you get. Our lines are shorter, with the words of the course.

🔬 Why a tale here: one question, «Чем?», comes back again and again with a new answer – spaced retrieval inside a story (Rogers 2025; Wegener 2023); the ending carries the meaning (с руки́ – с ры́бой), so the student must hear it to understand (VanPatten); a tale is a chunk with a rhythm (Wray 2002). Our own method: Natasha's Language Aerobics – every line has a movement.
