Brian Mak: «Вверхy» and «внизу», which means "at the top (of)" and "at the bottom (of)" respectively, denote the (static) position of something and thus answer the question «где?»; whilst «вверх» and «вниз», which means "towards the top (of)" and "towards the bottom (of)" respectively, denote the motion of something and thus answer the question «куда?». For example:

• Анна идёт вниз по лестнице. - Anna is coming down the stairs (motion).
• Она теперь внизу. - She is now downstairs (result of the said motion).
• Анна идёт вверх по лестнице. - Anna is coming up the stairs (motion).
• Она теперь вверху (наверху). - She is now upstairs (result of the said motion).
