A word grows – and its loud syllable may jump: ход → ходи́ть → прихо́дит → перехо́д. 🦘

1. Human LEGO. Four people are four parts: one is «при», one «ход», one «и́», one «ть». Stand in the right order and say the word together: «приходи́ть!» Then change the prefix: «у»! – «уходи́ть!» 🧍🧍🧍🧍

💡 Пра́вило · Rule

• ★ приста́вка + ко́рень + су́ффикс + оконча́ние – prefix + root + suffix + ending
• при-ход-и́-ть · под-око́н-ник · ра́д-ост-н-ый · кот-ик
• only the root is always there; the other parts can be missing (кот, ход, сыр)
• read a new word from the root: find it, then the prefix (where?), the suffix (what kind?)

ударе́ние⁠ – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН⁠ – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н⁠ – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?

😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

English words are built like this too: un-help-ful-ly. But Russian does it all the time: one root and a few parts give you a whole family. And a Russian «cheese-thing» – сы́рник – is a delicious cheese pancake! 🥞 Scuffles knew it! 😹

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

• Everything together. Prefix (День 17), suffix (25), root (28) – today they are put together; the student sees the whole system.
• LEGO bricks in colours. Four colours for four parts make the structure of a word visible (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
• Making words. Building and cutting words is a strong tool for a growing vocabulary (Nation 2013, word parts).
• The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles builds «ход-при-ть» – and then a real word, сы́рник. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
