📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – посло́вица, перево́дчик, смысл.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: переводи́ть – «Я переведу́ посло́вицу на мой язы́к» – I will translate
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 37: a proverb you love – in Russian and in your language:
«Век живи́ – век учи́сь.» 📚🌍
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you do what WikiTranslate is for: one proverb – a page in every language.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: move a word from one hand to the other ⚽ (День 37) – then point at the map of the world 🌍.
- A proverb is short, old and wise. Every language has its own – often with the same idea, but other words.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
посло́вица – a proverb: a finger up, a wise face ☝️🦉 · смысл – the meaning: tap your head 💡 · перево́дчик – a translator: two hands, two languages 🤝
👂 Listen first. A wise finger ☝️ on every proverb.
Ска́ффлз (with cheese in her paws): Лу́чше сыр в ру́ки, чем жура́вль в не́бе!
- Ната́ша: В рука́х, Ска́ффлз! Где? – в рука́х. И не сыр, а сини́ца – a little bird. 😄
Ска́ффлз: Для ко́шки сыр в рука́х лу́чше сини́цы! 😼🧀
- Ри́чард: А по-англи́йски: «A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.» По-ру́сски – сини́ца и жура́вль, по-англи́йски – две пти́цы в кусте́. 📒
- Ната́ша: Вот! Оди́н смысл – ра́зные слова́. Э́то и есть перево́д. 🌍
Сли́нки гляди́т в окно́ на птиц. Ни сини́ц, ни журавле́й. 😺
🌍 Six proverbs – tap them, then write your language in the last column ✍️
| 🇷🇺 Russian | 🇬🇧 English | 🌍 yours | |

How a Russian proverb is made: short · two halves (– or а / чем) · often a rhyme or a beat (живи́ – учи́сь, е́дешь – бу́дешь) · often a ты-command meant for everybody: «Век живи́ – век учи́сь».
Say every proverb aloud – with its gesture.
Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь. 🐢
Век живи́ – век учи́сь. 📚
Ум хорошо́, а два лу́чше. 🧠🧠
Лу́чше сини́ца в рука́х, чем жура́вль в не́бе. 🐦
Глаза́ боя́тся, а ру́ки де́лают. 👀✋
- Translate three proverbs into your language – the meaning, or your language's own saying (День 37). Write them in the last column. ✍️🌍
- Do you have an account on WikiTranslate? Then your language can get its own page next to the Russian one – ask Natasha. 🌍
- Speaking is optional – writing counts too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Which proverb has the same meaning? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Proverbs have a beat, like poems (День 17–18) – that is why they are easy to remember:
- Век жи-ВИ́ – век у-ЧИ́СЬ 👏👏 · ТИ́-ше Е́-дешь – ДА́ЛЬ-ше БУ́-дешь 👏👏👏👏
- Say them like a little march – one step on each loud syllable. 🚶
- посло́вица – по-СЛО́-ви-ца 👏 (from сло́во – a word!). 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning open День 1 of Курс 4 and read its first lines – then say one line of it in your language. 🌍 «Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́!» – how do you say it?
That is the first minute of День 39. You already know it – so День 39 starts with a win.
- Proverb twins. One says a Russian proverb – the other says its twin in English or in your language: «Век живи́ – век учи́сь!» – «Live and learn!» 🤝
- Show the proverb. Only gestures: 🐢 · 🧠🧠 · 🐦 in the hand · 👀✋ · ✨ – the others say the proverb.
- Make a new one! Two halves, a beat: «Ко́шка спит – сыр лежи́т!» 😼 – the funniest wins.
Two heads are better than one.
Translate together – with a friend, with a dictionary, with the English page. Two minds find the right words faster. 🧠🧠 🤸 Gesture: tap your head, then tap your friend's head.
Read the six proverbs in the table aloud – tap each one to open its page. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ПОСЛО́ВИЦА · ПЕРЕВО́ДЧИК · СМЫСЛ
On each page: the stress, the words, the meaning, the English twin – and a 🌍 link to the other languages.
смысл – the meaning · мысль – a thought · мы́слить – to think · бессмы́слица – nonsense (без- + смысл!) 😄
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Лу́чше сыр в ру́ки, чем жура́вль в не́бе! – В рука́х, Ска́ффлз! Где? – в рука́х. И не сыр, а сини́ца. – Для ко́шки сыр в рука́х лу́чше сини́цы! – А по-англи́йски: «A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.» По-ру́сски – сини́ца и жура́вль, по-англи́йски – две пти́цы в кусте́. – Вот! Оди́н смысл – ра́зные слова́. Э́то и есть перево́д. Сли́нки гляди́т в окно́ на птиц.
Better cheese «в ру́ки» than a crane in the sky! (Scuffles's mistake: where? – в рука́х) – «В рука́х», Scuffles! Where? – in the hands. And not cheese – a tit, a little bird. – For a cat, cheese in the hand is better than a tit! – And in English: «A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.» In Russian – a tit and a crane, in English – two birds in a bush. – There! One meaning – different words. That is translation. Slinky looks out of the window at the birds.
- A proverb: short · two halves · a beat or a rhyme · often a ты-command for everybody.
- Translate the meaning – find your language's twin.
- WikiTranslate: an English page + a page in every language (/Russian, /French, /Greek …) + the 🌍 list of all of them.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Many proverbs travel between languages: «Не всё то зо́лото, что блести́т» and «All that glitters is not gold» both come from old Latin. Others are only Russian – like «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» (people say it comes from the days of horses and coachmen 🐎). Finding the twin is the fun of translating. 🌍
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Proverbs as chunks. A proverb is learned as one piece with its rhythm – easy to remember, easy to use (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- Translate into your own language. Writing the twin in your language makes you compare and notice – and gives WikiTranslate a new page (Cook 2010).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
