2 😾 Scuffles: «Ти́ше е́дешь – бо́льше съешь!» How is it right?

Ти́ше е́дешь – ДА́ЛЬШЕ БУ́ДЕШЬ.

Ти́ше е́дешь – ДА́ЛЬШЕ СЪЕШЬ.

3 📖 «Жи́ли-бы́ли…» – how does … begin?

a tale
a letter
the news

4 👋 «купи́ть кота́ в мешке́» – a piece of a sentence, no lesson. It is …

a погово́рка
a посло́вица
a зага́дка

5 Why do people remember proverbs so easily?

the rhyme and the beat – two halves
they are very long
they are new every year

Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! · Two small things left – two minutes.

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: the beat of a proverb

Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь: ДА-да ДА-да | ДА-да ДА-да – the same beat in both halves.

  • Clap it: ТИ́-ше Е́-дешь 👏👏 | ДА́ЛЬ-ше БУ́-дешь 👏👏.
  • Посло́вица – мо́лвится: -вица and -вится sound the same, «-вица» – -ТСЯ = «ЦА» (День 3). That is a rhyme!
  • Ш is hard (День 4): ти́ше «ти́шы», да́льше «да́льшы». 30 секу́нд ка́ждый день. · 30 seconds every day.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

За́втра скажи́те, что вам бо́льше всего́ помога́ло в Ку́рсах 1–4. · Tomorrow say what helped you most in Курс 1–4:
«Мне помога́ют же́сты.» 👐 · «Мне помога́ет ко́шка.» 😾 · «Мне помога́ют посло́вицы.» 🦉 · «Мне помога́ют пятна́дцать мину́т.» ⏱

Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. Полови́нки. One says the first half of a proverb ✋ – the others say the second half 🤚: «Ти́ше е́дешь…» – «…да́льше бу́дешь!» · «Повторе́ние…» – «…мать уче́ния!» · «Век живи́…» – «…век учи́сь!» · «Ска́зка – ложь…» – «…да в ней намёк!»
  2. Ска́зка по кру́гу. Tell a tale you all know – one sentence each: «Посади́л дед ре́пку…» – «Вы́росла ре́пка больша́я-пребольша́я…»
  3. Посло́вица или погово́рка? One says it – the others show 🦉 (a whole sentence with a lesson) or 👋 (only a piece).

Remembering a word with the whole body works better than reading it again.

🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Посло́вица недаро́м мо́лвится.

A proverb is not said for nothing.
«мо́лвится» – is said: from мо́лвить, an old word for «to say», in tales and books. And hear the rhyme: посло́вица – мо́лвится! 🤸 Gesture: one finger up, nod like a wise owl 🦉.

  • 📖 ска́зка – a story: Жи́ли-бы́ли… – Вот и ска́зке коне́ц.
  • 🦉 посло́вица – a whole sentence with a lesson.
  • 👋 погово́рка – a piece of a sentence: купи́ть кота́ в мешке́.
  • 🤔 зага́дка – a question; отга́дка – its answer.
  • Two halves, one beat: Ти́ше е́дешь | да́льше бу́дешь.
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

English proverbs rhyme and beat too: «An apple a day | keeps the doctor away». «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» is «Slow and steady wins the race» – the same idea, another picture: a Russian sledge, an English race. 🐢😄

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Rhyme helps a saying stay – and sound true. People believed rhyming sayings more than the same idea without a rhyme – McGlone · Tofighbakhsh 2000, the «rhyme as reason» effect.
  • Stories are easier to remember than lists of facts – Willingham 2004, «the privileged status of story». That is why a tale is the reward of a lesson.
  • A proverb lives twice – heard first, read later: Natasha's rule for the course (meeting a word again over several days makes it stay).
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles mixes two proverbs – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
