«Смета́на» – густо́й ки́слый моло́чный проду́кт. Её кладу́т в борщ и в сала́т. Из «смета́ть» – собира́ть све́рху.
«Смета́на» is sour cream – a thick, slightly sour milk product. People put it in borscht and salads. From «смета́ть» (to skim off the top).
