  • impf command 〰️ – start and go on: говори́те, чита́йте, пиши́те.
  • To you (one friend): скажи́! говори́! · to вы: + -те.
  • Pairs: говори́ть – сказа́ть · пока́зывать – показа́ть.
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.

«Скажи́те и покажи́те» was on every day of Курс 1 and Курс 2 – now you know it is two pf commands: «say it and show it» ☝️☝️. 😊
говори́ть – сказа́ть are brothers with different faces, like English go – went. The dictionary page of говори́ть shows both.

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Commands are what learners hear first. Every lesson is full of them (Слу́шайте! Повторя́йте! Чита́йте!) – today the learner sees why some are pf and some impf.
  • A word the learner already knows. «Скажи́те и покажи́те» has been a heading since День 1 – meaning added to a familiar form is remembered easily.
  • The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
