ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «helped» is one word for everybody. Russian has four – помо́г, помогла́, помогло́, помогли́ – it depends on who helped. In one week you learned the language of a teacher – and why each piece of the method works. 💪

- The whole week in one table. Seeing things side by side helps you notice the difference: Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis.
- A riddle at the end. Guessing first, even wrongly, helps the answer stay: Kornell · Hays · Bjork 2009.
- Who teaches, learns. Students who expect to teach a text remember it better and more clearly: Nestojko et al. 2014. That is the idea of Курс 5.
