🟢 Слова́ то́лько во мно́жественном числе́ · words that are only plural
Э́ти слова́ всегда́ во мно́жественном числе́ – у них нет фо́рмы «оди́н». Ча́сто э́то ве́щи из двух часте́й (брю́ки, очки́, но́жницы), еда́ и вещества́ (де́ньги, сли́вки, щи), и́гры (ша́хматы, пря́тки), вре́мя и собы́тия (су́тки, кани́кулы, вы́боры), ме́ста (А́льпы, Афи́ны). У них нет ро́да: не он, не она́, не оно́ – они́.
These words are always plural – they have no «one» form. Often they are things with two parts (trousers, glasses, scissors), food and stuff (money, cream, cabbage soup), games (chess, hide and seek), time and events (24 hours, holidays, elections), places (the Alps, Athens). They have no gender – they are «они́».
🟢 Words with them are plural: мои́ часы́, но́вые брю́ки, где мои́ очки́? Э́ти де́ньги – твои́.
⏳ Past tense – plural: Часы́ останови́лись. Де́ньги ко́нчились. Кани́кулы прошли́.
🔢 Counting: not «два часы́»! For 1 say одни́: одни́ часы́, одни́ су́тки. For 2, 3, 4 say дво́е, тро́е, че́тверо + genitive: дво́е су́ток, тро́е но́жниц. Or use a helper word: две па́ры брюк (two pairs of trousers).
🔤 Some have a singular with another meaning: час (an hour) → часы́ (a clock); стих (a line) → стихи́ (poems); вы́бор (a choice) → вы́боры (elections); дух (a spirit) → духи́ (perfume).
📛 Many of these words come from verbs: пря́тки ← пря́тать, носи́лки ← носи́ть, догоня́лки ← догоня́ть, пла́вки ← пла́вать, скака́лки ← скака́ть.
