Где моё кольцо́?
Where is my ring?
⏱ 15 (+ 25 if you want more) min · 🎒 You need: a ring 💍 (or a coin, a hair band – any small thing), a bag 👜, a jar or a cup, a newspaper – and a few things from the last days: a lemon 🍋, a banana 🍌

📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 new – кольцо́, мой (моя́, моё) – 👂 heard only today. And all your words from День 1–7 come back!

Часть 1 · Обяза́тельно · 15 мину́тPart 1 – everybody does this. 15 minutes.
🤸 Разми́нка · Warm-up (1 min)

Stand up! Yesterday's homework – play the game: hands behind your back – «Где рука́?» – show them: «Вот рука́!» Cover your nose – «Где нос?» – «Вот нос!» Duck down – «Где голова́?» – pop up: «Вот голова́!» 🙆
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today is a review day: no new letters, only one small new thing – мой = my. And a ring. 💍

👀👂 Смотри́те и слу́шайте · Watch and listen
ГДЕ МОЁ КОЛЬЦО́? 💍

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: О without stress

Russian О says a round о only on the loud syllable: кот, нос, торт, стол.

  • Away from the loud syllable, О sounds like а: окно́ = «акно́», она́ = «ана́», тома́т = «тама́т».
  • Two or three О in one word – only one is round: голова́ = «галава́», помидо́р = «памидо́р», потоло́к = «патало́к».
  • Read it with О – say it with А. Russians do it in every word, every day. 😄
  • 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow morning, hide a ring (or a coin) – in a bag, under a book, in a cup – and ask: «Где кольцо́? – В су́мке!» Then find it: «Вот кольцо́!» 💍
That is the first minute of День 9. You already know it – so День 9 starts with a win.

✔ Часть 1 гото́ва! Part 1 done.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 9 · Ру́ки, но́ги, ла́пы и коты́! ▶
Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game

«У меня́ пропа́л мой нос! – А вот и нос!» – Natasha's old game «У меня́ пропа́л мой но́сик»: you lose a part of you – and find it again! Hide it on «пропа́л…» with a frightened face 😱, show it on «А вот и…!» with a happy face 🎉. 👂 Listen and play – you don't need to read it.

Say Do
У меня́ пропа́л мой нос! cover your nose with your hand – a frightened face 😱
А вот и нос! take the hand away, finger on your nose on НОС 🎉
У меня́ пропа́ла моя́ рука́! hide your hand behind your back
А вот и рука́! show it on КА
У меня́ пропа́ла моя́ нога́! stand on one leg, the other foot behind you
А вот и нога́! put your foot forward on ГА
У меня́ пропа́л мой глаз! cover one eye
А вот и глаз! open it, point at it on ГЛАЗ
У меня́ пропа́ло моё кольцо́! hide the hand with the ring (or a coin) in your other hand
А вот и кольцо́! open your hand, show it on ЦО 💍🎉

Listen: пропа́л мой нос · пропа́ла моя́ рука́ · пропа́ло моё кольцо́ – the end of the word follows мой – моя́ – моё. Just listen; the rule comes much later.

  1. Play it three times – a little faster each time.
  2. The big review – Повтори́м! Go through the words below, one row a day: read a word aloud, then do its gesture. Don't remember the gesture? Make up your own – it counts!
  3. Gesture → word. Don't look. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 💍 · 👃 · 🍋 · 🚩 · 🪑 · 💡 · 🎂 · 🦷 · 👜 · 🪟

Remembering a word from the gesture works better than reading it again.

🎬 Ма́ленькая исто́рия · a little story · 10 min · 👂 watch and laugh

I'm… Natasha! – Masha says who she is: «Я Ма́ша. Э́то моя́ ма́ма…» – and then she gets mixed up 😄

One week ago you could not read one Russian word. Молоде́ц!
🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 heard at the end of the video · 👀 you will read it on День 13

Repetition is the mother of learning.
Today is a review day: Slinky repeated every word with Natasha – and Slinky found the ring. 🐈💍 The Romans said it too: Repetitio est mater studiorum. Gesture: roll your hands round and round on «повторе́ние» (again and again), open a book with both hands on «уче́ния».

Live a century – learn a century = you learn all your life.
Richard says it at the end of the video – he is our everlasting student. 📚 It is the motto of the review days: 👂 heard today, 👀 read on День 14, the next review day.
🔊 Sound, meaning, word by word: tap a proverb – it opens its own page.

That is my ring! – Grrr… Slinky, well done! Repetition is the mother of learning. – Live a century, learn a century! Well done! Bye!

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • Мой = my. It changes with the word: мой нос (он) · моя́ рука́ (она́) · моё кольцо́ (оно́).
  • Ends in -а → she: моя́ ла́па, моя́ газе́та. Ends in -о → it: моё фо́то, моё окно́. The rest → he: мой кот, мой стол.
  • Listen only today – the letters й, я, ё come later.
  • No new letters today. You know 19 – today you read and repeat. 🔁
  • Tap a new word or its picture – the dictionary opens 📖. Tap 🔊 to hear it.
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

МОЙ – say it: moy. English my and Russian мой are very old relatives – the same root, thousands of years old. 🤝
Scuffles sits on the ring and says «Моё!» – does she remind you of someone who said "my precious"? 💍😼
КОЛЬЦО́ – a ring – comes from the old word ко́ло, a wheel, a circle. ⭕
Повторе́ние – мать уче́ния: the Romans said it first – Repetitio est mater studiorum.

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • A review day with no new letters. Words met again after a gap of one to a few days are remembered much better than words met many times in one go; gaps of 1–4 days work best. Study with adults – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025. A written word met four times over several days was remembered far better than four times in a row (84 % vs 63 %, Wegener et al. 2023).
  • Remember first, then check. Reading the words of seven days alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – one of the best-proven tools: 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
  • 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one: 35 min × 6 days scored 83 vs 70 for one 3.5-hour lesson. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
  • A gesture that matches the word. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig).
  • Watching helps too. Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it, so the video works even before you move. 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
  • The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
  • A block before the rule. «Мой нос, моя́ рука́» is learned whole, like a song; the rule comes much later, after the form has been met many times. Learners pick up such ready-made blocks whole (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
  • One new thing. Today only мой / моя́ / моё is new – a beginner holds about four new things in mind at once (Sweller, cognitive load).
  • The proverb is heard first, then read. Natasha says it once at the end of the video, where the story shows it; its explanation sits in Part 2, outside the core lesson – extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details). An idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
  • Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
