Stand up! Yesterday's homework: walk to your window – «Иду́ к окну́!» 🪟 – and back – «Иду́ от окна́!» And call someone: «Иди́ ко мне!» 🐈
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you walk to the window again – and stop. And somebody sees a wolf by the window… 🐺
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who sits by the window? And where is Scuffles – near what? 🧊
- Who is by the window at night – a wolf? 🐺
- Listen: к окну́ – she walks · у окна́ – she stopped. Do you hear the ends? 👂
- Tap the word above to hear it.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable. Today you walk – and stop!
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🙌 New today – two words, and you can read them:
- у = by, at – right by it, you can touch it: «Я у окна́.» 🪟 And у a person: «Ска́ффлз у Ри́чарда.» – by Richard. (You know у already: «У Ри́чарда есть молоко́» – Richard has, День 16.)
- о́коло = near – a few steps away: «Ска́ффлз о́коло холоди́льника.» 🧊 Of course – the fish is there! 😄
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
ша́пка Ри́чарда = Richard's hat – you know it from День 27: «Где ша́пка Ри́чарда?» 🎩
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! Stand up – you will walk and stop. 🚶🛑
And you? Walk to your window and stop: «Я у окна́!» – then stand a few steps from your fridge: «Я о́коло холоди́льника!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
★ Today's rule – 30 seconds. The ending is an old friend – the «нет» ending. Now – walk → stop:
- к окну́ – you walk to it (yesterday) → у окна́ – you stopped, right by it → от окна́ – you walk away (yesterday).
- after у and о́коло the «нет» ending (День 29): у стола́, о́коло холоди́льника, у окна́ · она́ → -ы / -и: у ша́пки, о́коло ла́мпы
- у = right by it (you can touch it) · о́коло = near it (a few steps).
One у, two jobs: «У Ри́чарда есть молоко́» – Richard has (День 16) · «Ска́ффлз у Ри́чарда» – Scuffles is by Richard. Scuffles says «у окно́» – you know better now. 😄 (After у and о́коло – роди́тельный паде́ж, genitive. The name is for later.)
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
Иду́ к окну́… Стоп! Я у окна́. 🪟
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: У стра́ха глаза́ велики́. 👀
- Walk to the window and stop: «Я у окна́!» 🪟
- Walk to the table and stop: «Я у стола́!» – then go a few steps from it: «Я о́коло стола́!» 🍽️
- Where is your cat – or your bag, your phone? «Ко́шка у окна́!» «Су́мка о́коло дива́на!» 👜
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look only at the end of the word – or the little word. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Two little words – two sound tricks:
- о́коло = «о́-ка-ла» – only the first О is loud and round. The other two have no stress, so they sound like «а» (День 8).
- у окна́ = «у-акна́» – two vowels meet: say them smoothly, one after the other, no stop.
- у Ри́чарда = «у-ри́чарда» – one word, no pause.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, walk to your window and stop: «Я у окна́!» 🪟 Then stand a few steps from your fridge: «Я о́коло холоди́льника!» 🧊
That is the first minute of День 36. You already know it – so День 36 starts with a win.
«Стоп!» – walk, stop, say where you are. Natasha's sign from День 34: →●← = to · and today ●| = stop by it. 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Иду́ к окну́ – Стоп! Я у окна́! | 🪟 |
| Иду́ к столу́ – Стоп! Я у стола́! | 🍽️ |
| Иду́ к дива́ну – Стоп! Я о́коло дива́на! | walk – stop a step away – draw a small circle 🛋️ |
| Иду́ к ла́мпе – Стоп! Я у ла́мпы! | walk – freeze – click the lamp 💡 |
| А Ска́ффлз? – О́коло холоди́льника! | shrug, point at the fridge, laugh 😾 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then a friend says «Иду́ к …» – and you say «Стоп! Я у …!»
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 🛑 у · ⭕ о́коло · 🪟 окно́ · 🎩 ша́пка · 🐺 волк
- Yesterday comes back. Four words from День 34: к 🚶 · от 🔙 · от кого́? 🎁 · ко мне! 🙋
к = you walk to it · у = you stopped, right by it · о́коло = near it · от = you walk away. 😄
Сади́лись у лю́лечки, 👶
Они́ ста́ли ворко́вать – 💬
Стал Ваню́шка засыпа́ть. 😴
Little doves, little doves sat by the cradle; they began to coo – and little Vanya began to fall asleep.
A folk lullaby. гу́ли = what children call doves and pigeons; лю́лечка = a baby's cradle. у лю́лечки – у + -и, like today's у окна́! Gestures: flap your hands like wings on ГУ́, rock a cradle on ЛЮ́, coo «гу-гу» on ВОР-КО-ВА́ТЬ, hands under your cheek on ЗА-СЫ-ПА́ТЬ – say the last line quietly. You don't have to learn it – just say it and smile. 😊
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: У · О́КОЛО
★ у: У ОКНА́ · У СТОЛА́ · У ДИВА́НА · У РИ́ЧАРДА · У ША́ПКИ · У ЛА́МПЫ
★ о́коло: О́КОЛО ХОЛОДИ́ЛЬНИКА · О́КОЛО ДИВА́НА · О́КОЛО СТОЛА́ · О́КОЛО ОКНА́
★ walk → stop → walk: К ОКНУ́ → У ОКНА́ → ОТ ОКНА́
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
У СТРА́ХА ГЛАЗА́ ВЕЛИКИ́.
💡 Names from other languages don't change: у Сли́нки, о́коло Ска́ффлз. And у + a person can mean «has» too: у Ри́чарда есть молоко́ (День 16). Tomorrow – о: talking about things. 😉
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Fear has big eyes.
Scuffles saw a big black wolf by the window – and it was only Richard's hat. When we are afraid, small things look big. Slinky wasn't afraid – she went and sat by the hat. Look: у стра́ха – today's у! (страх = fear; глаза́ = eyes – one глаз, two глаза́; велики́ = too big, an old short word for больши́е.) English has no exact twin – the idea is fear makes things look bigger. Gesture: hug yourself and shiver on «у стра́ха», make big round eyes with your fingers on «глаза́ велики́». (No proverb page or mp3 yet.)
Hello! I'm going to the window… Stop! I'm by the window. Slinky, come to me! Slinky is by the window. Slinky – well done! And where is Scuffles? – Near the fridge! Scuffles, come to me! – Grrr… – It's cold! The hat goes on the chair. The chair is by the window. – Scuffles, come to me! – Scuffles is by Richard. And Richard has a fish! Night. The cats are asleep. Quiet! – Miaow!!! – What's there? By the window? A wolf?! Scuffles is under the sofa! Where is the wolf? By the window? No! It's not a wolf. It's Richard's hat! Slinky is by the hat. Slinky – well done! – Grrr… – Fear has big eyes. Well done! Bye!
- ★ Walk → stop.
- у: у окна́, у стола́, у ша́пки – right by it.
- о́коло: о́коло холоди́льника – near it.
- Both take the «нет» ending.
- к окну́ → у окна́ → от окна́.
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «by», «at», «near» – Russian «у» and «о́коло»: «Я у окна́» – I'm by the window · «Я у Ри́чарда» – I'm at Richard's (at his place!). 🏠
«У меня́ есть…» – Russians don't say «I have» – they say «by me there is». So «у» was in your Russian long before today. 😄
о́коло ← ко́ло – an old word for a circle, a wheel (like кольцо́, День 8!). Near = somewhere in the circle round it. ⭕
У стра́ха глаза́ велики́ – fear makes things look bigger.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The ending must carry the meaning. In the tap quiz only the end of the word – or the little word – tells you the answer – structured input, the learner must use the form to understand (VanPatten · processing instruction).
- Old ending, new little words. The «нет» ending (День 29) comes back with у and о́коло, and у was heard for weeks in «у меня́», «у Ри́чарда» – formulaic language first, the rule later (Wray 2002).
- A short rule after many meetings. Short explicit teaching works better than none – 49 studies – Norris · Ortega 2000.
- Noticing. The orange and purple endings make the change visible – к окну́ → у окна́ – Schmidt 1990, noticing.
- The whole body walks and stops. You walk to a thing and freeze by it – the little words are felt before they are named – Total Physical Response, Asher 1969; gestures with words – Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- 15 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long one – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
