День 36 из 37: О ком мы говорим?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 5 – о, о ком?, о чём?, ду́маю, говорю́ · говори́м – and ★ the «где?» ending again: на столе́ → о столе́ · о ко́шке · о ры́бке.
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
· Это не первый день. Почти все слова вы уже знаете.
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: walk to your window and stop – «Я у окна́!» 🪟 Then stand a few steps from your fridge – «Я о́коло холоди́льника!» 🧊
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today we stop walking and start thinking… and Scuffles thinks about only one thing. 🐟
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: what does Natasha think about? And Slinky? 🐭
- What does Scuffles think about – always? 🐟
- Listen: на столе́ – where · о столе́ – about. The same ending! 👂
- Tap the word above to hear it.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable. Today you think and talk!
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🙌 New today – five words, and you can read them:
- о = about: «Я ду́маю о шокола́де.» 🍫 – «Мы говори́м о ко́шке.» 🐈
- о ком? – about whom? – people and animals (like кто). о чём? – about what? – things (like что).
- я ду́маю = I think · я говорю́ = I talk, I speak · мы говори́м = we talk. (You heard «Как говори́т соба́ка?» on День 25!)
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
мы́шка = a little mouse – Slinky's toy (День 34). ры́бка = a little fish – Scuffles's dream. 😄
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! Finger to your temple – you are thinking. 🤔
And you? Finger to your temple: «Я ду́маю о …» – о ча́е? о ко́шке? о Ло́ндоне? – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
★ Today's rule – 30 seconds. The ending is an old friend – the «где?» ending (День 26):
- где? на столе́, в су́мке → о столе́, о су́мке – the same ending -е.
- о чём? – things: о шокола́де, о кни́ге, о ры́бке · о ком? – people and animals: о Ри́чарде, о ко́шке, о тебе́.
- Names from other languages don't change: о Сли́нки, о Ска́ффлз.
🌱 Two new verbs: я ду́маю · я говорю́ · мы говори́м. Scuffles says «о ры́бка» – you know better now. 😄 (After о – предло́жный паде́ж, prepositional – the same ending as «где?». The name is for later.)
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: Кто о чём, а голо́дный – о хле́бе. 🍞
- Finger to your temple: «Я ду́маю о …!» – о ча́е? о шокола́де? о ко́шке? 🤔
- Point at a friend – or your cat: «Мы говори́м о тебе́!» 🐈
- Open a book: «Кни́га о …» – what is it about? «Кни́га о ко́шке!» «Кни́га о Ло́ндоне!» 📖
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look only at the end of the word – or the little word. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
The little word о has no stress – so it sounds like «а» (День 8):
- о чём = «а-чём» · о ко́шке = «а-ко́шке» · о Ри́чарде = «а-ри́чарде» – one word, no pause.
- говорю́ = «га-ва-рю́» – two О without stress, both like «а».
- голо́дный = «га-ло́д-ный» – only the loud О is round.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, finger to your temple: «Я ду́маю о …!» 🤔 Then point at someone – or your cat: «Мы говори́м о тебе́!» 🐈
That is the first minute of День 37. You already know it – so День 37 starts with a win.
«О чём я ду́маю?» – a guessing game. Finger to your temple, then the gesture of an old word – no word, only the gesture. Your friend guesses: «О …!» 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Я ду́маю… – О ры́бке! | finger to your temple – your hand swims 🐟 |
| Я ду́маю… – О шокола́де! | finger to your temple – pull the paper down 🍫 |
| Я ду́маю… – О мы́шке! | finger to your temple – two fingers run along your arm 🐭 |
| Я ду́маю… – О кни́ге! | finger to your temple – open your palms like a book 📖 |
| Я ду́маю… – О ко́шке! | finger to your temple – cat's ears on your head 🐈 |
| А Ска́ффлз? – Опя́ть о ры́бке! | shrug – your hand swims – laugh 😾 |
- Play it three times. Then swap: your friend makes the gesture – you guess «О …!»
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 👉 о · 🤔 ду́маю · 🗣️ говорю́ · 🐭 мышь · 🍞 хлеб
- Yesterday comes back. Four words from День 35: у 🛑 · о́коло ⭕ · ша́пка 🎩 · волк 🐺
у окна́ = by the window · о́коло окна́ = near the window · об окне́ = about the window (before a vowel о becomes об!). 😄
Фи́лин на дубу́ сиди́т, 🦉
У него́ тако́й вот нос – 👃
Фи́лин пу́хом весь оброс!
An oak stands in an open field, an eagle-owl sits on the oak. He has a nose like this – the owl is all covered in fluff!
A folk rhyme. в по́ле and на дубу́ – where? Like на столе́ and на полу́! Gestures: arms up like a big tree on ДУБ, round owl eyes with your fingers on ФИ́, show a long nose on НОС, shake all over – fluffy! – on О-БРО́С. You don't have to learn it – just say it and smile. 😊
What are we talking about? – Natasha and Masha talk about Gagarin, cosmonauts and jokes 🚀
It is today's title: о чём? о ком? Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
КТО О ЧЁМ, А ГОЛО́ДНЫЙ – О ХЛЕ́БЕ.
💡 Me and you: обо мне – about me · о тебе́ – about you. Names from other languages don't change: о Сли́нки, о Ска́ффлз. Tomorrow – all the little words together, and a riddle! 😉
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Everyone talks about something – and a hungry man talks about bread.
Natasha and Richard talked about the book and about Slinky – and Scuffles thought only about her fish. Everyone thinks and talks about what matters to them most. Look: о хле́бе – today's о! (голо́дный = hungry; хлеб – bread, День 9.) English has no exact twin. Gesture: point round at other people on «кто о чём», pat your empty tummy on «а голо́дный», break a loaf on «о хле́бе». (No proverb page or mp3 yet.)
Hello! I'm thinking… What am I thinking about? About chocolate! And Slinky? About what? About her little mouse! And Scuffles? About a little fish! – Natasha, here's a book about a cat! – About a cat? Thank you, Richard! We are talking about a cat. About whom? About Slinky! Slinky – well done! I'm talking about Scuffles! Scuffles! We are talking about you! …a little fish… Oh! I talk about a fish – and Scuffles is here! Scuffles! No, no, no! Shoo! – Grrr… – Everyone talks about something – and a hungry man about bread. Well done! Bye!
- ★ о = about.
- о чём? – things: о шокола́де, о кни́ге.
- о ком? – people, animals: о Ри́чарде, о ко́шке, о тебе́.
- The «где?» ending: на столе́ → о столе́.
- я ду́маю · я говорю́ · мы говори́м.
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Look at the title of this box: «Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски» – «for those who speak English». You have seen it on every page – now you can read it! 😄
«Я говорю́ по-англи́йски» = I speak English. «Я говорю́ о ко́шке» = I talk about a cat.
Ду́ма – the Russian parliament – comes from ду́мать, to think. 🏛️
о – one letter, one of the smallest Russian words – like English a.
Кто о чём, а голо́дный – о хле́бе – everyone talks about what matters to them.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The ending must carry the meaning. In the tap quiz only the end of the word – or the little word – tells you the answer – structured input, the learner must use the form to understand (VanPatten · processing instruction).
- Old ending, new little word. The «где?» ending (День 26) comes back with о – one ending, two jobs – so nothing new to learn but the little word (Wray 2002, chunks first, the rule later).
- A short rule after many meetings. Short explicit teaching works better than none – 49 studies – Norris · Ortega 2000.
- Noticing. The blue endings make the change visible – на столе́ → о столе́ – Schmidt 1990, noticing.
- Gestures for thinking and talking. Finger to the temple, the talking hand – words learned with a gesture are remembered better – Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. The guessing game makes you pull the old words out of memory – retrieval practice, 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- 15 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long one – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
