📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 4 – к (ко), от, от кого́?, ко мне! – and ★ from → to: от Ри́чарда → к Ри́чарду · от меня́ → ко мне.

⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
· Это не первый день. Почти все слова вы уже знаете.
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: take your hat off – «Снима́ю ша́пку с головы́!» 🧢 – and take a pen out of your bag – «Беру́ ру́чку из су́мки!» 👜
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you move: you walk to a thing and away from it. And Scuffles walks away from Natasha… 😾
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who comes to Natasha – and who walks away? 🐈
- Who is the present from? 🎁
- Listen: к Ри́чарду – she goes to him · от Ри́чарда – the present comes from him. Do you hear the ends? 👂
- Tap the word above to hear it.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable. Today your whole body moves – step forward, step back!
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🙌 New today – four words, and you can read them:
- к = to, towards – to a person or a thing: «Иду́ к Ри́чарду.» 👨 (and ко before мне: ко мне)
- от = from, away from – the pair of к: к Ри́чарду → от Ри́чарда. 🎁
- от кого́? = from whom? «Пода́рок? От кого́? – От Ри́чарда!» ❓ (День 31: кому́? – to whom?)
- ко мне! = come to me! – what every Russian says to a cat or a dog. And от меня́ = away from me – like «у меня́» (День 7). 🐈
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
мы́шка = a little mouse – like ры́ба → ры́бка. 🐭
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! Stand up – you will walk. 🚶
- Ната́ша: Где Ри́чард? Иду́ к Ри́чарду! 👨
Сли́нки: К Ри́чарду! — Ната́ша: Да! Так! 😊
- Ната́ша: А э́то пода́рок. 🎁 От кого́?
Ска́ффлз: От Ри́чард! — Ната́ша: Нет! От Ри́чарда. — Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… от Ри́чарда.
- Ри́чард: Сли́нки, иди́ ко мне! — Slinky goes to him. — Ната́ша: Сли́нки – к Ри́чарду! Сли́нки – молоде́ц! 😊
And you? Walk to your window: «Иду́ к окну́!» – and back: «Иду́ от окна́!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
★ Today's rule – 30 seconds. Both endings are old friends. Now – to → from:
- к – to: after к the кому́? ending (День 31): к Ри́чарду, к холоди́льнику, к окну́ · она́ → -е: к ры́бке, к ко́шке
- от – from, away from: after от the «нет» ending (День 29, and из / с yesterday): от Ри́чарда, от холоди́льника, от окна́ · она́ → -ы / -и: от ры́бки, от ко́шки
- me: ко мне ↔ от меня́ – «ко мне» like «Дай мне!» (День 31), «от меня́» like «у меня́».
Yesterday and today: из – out of (из су́мки) · с – off (со стола́) · от – from a person, away from a thing (от Ри́чарда). Scuffles says «от Ри́чард» – you know better now. 😄 (After к – да́тельный паде́ж, dative; after от – роди́тельный, genitive. The names are for later.)
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: От добра́ добра́ не и́щут. 🐭
- Walk to the window: «Иду́ к окну́!» – and back: «Иду́ от окна́!» 🪟
- Walk to the fridge and back: «Иду́ к холоди́льнику! Иду́ от холоди́льника!» 🧊
- Call your cat, your dog – or a friend: «Иди́ ко мне!» 🐈 Give a friend a little present: «От кого́? – От меня́!» 🎁
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look only at the end of the word. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
к and от are never alone – they stick to the next word:
- к Ри́чарду = «кри́чарду» – one word, no pause. к окну́ = «какну́» – О without stress sounds like «а» (День 8).
- к дива́ну = «гдива́ну» – К before Д, Б, Г, З… sounds like Г.
- от Ри́чарда = «атри́чарда» – the О of от has no stress, so it sounds like «а». от дива́на = «аддива́на» – Т before Д sounds like Д.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, walk to your window: «Иду́ к окну́!» 🪟 – and back: «Иду́ от окна́!» And call someone: «Иди́ ко мне!» 🐈
That is the first minute of День 35. You already know it – so День 35 starts with a win.
«К – от!» – walk there, walk back. Natasha's signs from День 32: →●← = to (кому́?) · ]→ = away from. 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Иду́ к окну́! | walk to the window →●← 🪟 |
| Иду́ от окна́! | walk back ]→ 🪟 |
| Иду́ к столу́! | walk to the table →●← 🍽️ |
| Иду́ от стола́! | walk back ]→ 🍽️ |
| Иду́ к холоди́льнику! | walk to the fridge →●← 🧊 |
| Иду́ от холоди́льника! | walk back, shiver «бр-р» ]→ 🧊 |
| Сли́нки, иди́ ко мне! | beckon with your fingers 🐈 |
| Ска́ффлз, иди́ ко мне! – Ска́ффлз – от меня́?! Нет! Ко мне! | beckon – look surprised – beckon again, hands on hips 😾 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then a friend says the first line of a pair – and you say the second.
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 🚶 к · 🔙 от · 🎁 от кого́? · 🙋 ко мне! · 🐭 мышь
- Yesterday comes back. Four words from День 33: отку́да? 👍 · из 👜 · с 🍽️ · снима́ю 🧤.
к = you walk to it · от = you walk away from it. из and с (yesterday) = a thing comes out of or off something. 😄
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
ОТ ДОБРА́ ДОБРА́ НЕ И́ЩУТ.
💡 Names from other languages don't change: к Сли́нки – от Сли́нки, к Ска́ффлз – от Ска́ффлз. And «by the window» – у окна́ – is tomorrow's little word! 😉
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
From good, people don't look for good.
Scuffles had a good mouse – her own present from Richard. But she wanted Slinky's mouse too – and now her own is under the sofa. When you have something good, don't run after something «better» – you may lose what you have. Look at the ending: от добра́ – today's от! (добро́ = good, a good thing; и́щут = they look for – from иска́ть.) English says: Leave well alone. Gesture: hug a thing to your chest on «от добра́», wag your finger on «не и́щут». (mp3 to add.)
– Р-р-р… – Молоде́ц! Пока́!
Hello! Slinky, come to me! Slinky – well done! Scuffles, come to me! No? Not to me but away from me! I'm going to the fridge. Here is a fish! Ah! Scuffles – not to me, but to the fish! No, Scuffles! The fish goes into the fridge. I'm walking away from the fridge. – Grrr… – Natasha, here is a present! – A present? From whom? – From me! – Thank you, Richard! I'm going to Richard. Oh! Toys! Two little mice! One mouse is for Slinky, one mouse is for Scuffles. The mouse goes to Slinky! The mouse goes away from Slinky! Scuffles! No, no, no! That's not your mouse! – Where is my mouse? – Under the sofa! Slinky – come to me! Slinky – well done! From good, people don't look for good. – Grrr… – Well done! Bye!
- ★ To → from.
- к: к Ри́чарду, к окну́, к ры́бке – the кому́? ending.
- от: от Ри́чарда, от окна́, от ры́бки – the «нет» ending.
- ко мне ↔ от меня́.
- Иди́ ко мне! = Come to me!
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «from» – Russian has three: из (out of: из су́мки), с (off: со стола́) – yesterday – and today's от (from a person: пода́рок от Ри́чарда). 🎁
English «to» – Russian «к» only for walking to someone or something: «Иду́ к Ри́чарду.» But «Дай мне» – no little word at all, only the ending (День 31)! 😄
«Ко мне!» – the first thing a Russian dog learns. Cats know it too – they just don't always come. 🐈
От добра́ добра́ не и́щут ≈ Leave well alone.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The ending must carry the meaning. In the tap quiz only the end of the word tells you the answer – structured input, the learner must use the form to understand (VanPatten · processing instruction).
- Old endings, new little words. The кому́? ending (День 31) and the «нет» ending (День 29) come back with к and от – formulaic language first, the rule later (Wray 2002).
- A short rule after many meetings. Short explicit teaching works better than none – 49 studies – Norris · Ortega 2000.
- Noticing. The orange and purple endings make the change visible – Schmidt 1990, noticing.
- The whole body walks. You walk to a thing and away from it – the little words are felt before they are named – Total Physical Response, Asher 1969; gestures with words – Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- 15 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long one – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
