Russian verb infinitive

Russian ns, prons, adjs & nums decline in gender: m, f, n; number: s, p & case: n, g, d, a, i, p. Adv, conj, interj, prep stay the same. Verbs: 3 ten, 2 asp; asp pairs are formed: via pref, suf & lex. Beware of verbs of position and motion!

Russian verb infinitive ends in -ть, -ти, -сть, -сти, -чь, -зть, -зти. It is the dictionary, "naked", form of the Russian verb, the base for all the other verb forms. It is used in the different constructions:

Constructions of possibility[edit]

“мочь + Infinitive” Depending on the situation, we can use the constructions “мочь + Imperfective Infinitive” and “мочь + Perfective Infinitive”. As usual, the choice depends on what you intend to say and what where your focus lies – process or the result.

Я могу писать. I can write.[edit]

Он ещё очень болен и не может ходить. He is still very sick and cannot walk. Каждый человек может ошибаться. Everyone may be mistaken.

Я не могу писать. I cannot write.[edit]

Преподаватель сказал, что мы свободны и можем идти домой. The teacher said that we may leave now.

Usage of “не + Infinitive” constructions[edit]

Imperfective Imperative[edit]

+ можешь/может Каждый может ошибаться. Люди могут ходить, куда они хотят. Ты можешь пить всё, что ты хочешь.

+ можешь/может не (one is allowed not to do it). Директор сказал, что мы можем не приходить так рано на работу. Ты можешь не пить так много, если не хочешь. Она может не говорить, если это секрет.

Perfective Imperative[edit]

Осторожно, в этом примере ты можешь ошибиться. Спасибо, вы можете идти. Ты не можешь выпить всю бутылку один!

+ не можешь/может (unable). Я не могу прийти завтра на работу. Он не может выпить целую бутылку один. Она не может сказать тебе это.
