Forming Russian aspectual pairs lexically
Russian ns, prons, adjs & nums decline in gender: m, f, n; number: s, p & case: n, g, d, a, i, p. Adv, conj, interj, prep stay the same. Verbs: 3 ten, 2 asp; asp pairs are formed: via pref, suf & lex. Beware of verbs of position and motion!
Though there are only a few Russian verbs that form aspectual pairs from verbs that have different roots, those verbs are used frequently in ordinary speech so you have to remember them:
- говорить-сказать (to speak)
- брать-взять (to take)
- ловить-поймать (to catch)
- покупать-купить (to buy)
These Russian verbs of position express the same action and the only difference between these two verbs is that one verb describes the incomplete action whereas the other describes the completed action:
- класть-положить (to put)
- садиться-сесть (to sit)
- становиться-стать (to stand up)
- ложиться-лечь (to lay down)
