⭐ Пра́вило · the rule – 30 seconds

Где кольцо́? – На па́льце. · Where is the ring? – On the finger.
Где ру́чка? – В руке́. · Where is the pen? – In the hand.
Куда́? – Надева́ю кольцо́ на па́лец. Беру́ ру́чку в ру́ку. · Where to? – I put the ring on the finger. I take the pen in my hand.

Где? – the thing is there, it does not move: на / в + -е (на столе́, в руке́). Куда́? – the thing goes there: на / в + the word as it is; only она́-words change -а → -у (на стол, в ру́ку). · Где? = предло́жный паде́ж (prepositional). Куда́? = вини́тельный паде́ж (accusative). Two questions – two endings. Listen to the end of the word, and you know if the thing is there or is going there.

📖 Что э́то? · two cases, two questions, why the names

В ру́сском языке́ сло́во ча́сто меня́ет коне́ц. Така́я фо́рма сло́ва называ́ется «паде́ж». · In Russian a word often changes its ending. Such a form of the word is called a "case".

Где? – предло́жный паде́ж. Вопро́сы: где? о ком? о чём? Он всегда́ стои́т с ма́леньким сло́вом: в, на, о. · Где? – the prepositional case. Questions: where? about whom? about what? It always comes after a small word (a preposition): в, на, о. That is why it is called "prepositional" – предло́г = a preposition, the word that stands before (пе́ред) the noun.

Я ду́маю о кольце́. · I think about the ring. – the second use of the same ending (later)

Куда́? – вини́тельный паде́ж. Вопро́сы: куда́? кого́? что? · Куда́? – the accusative case. Questions: where to? whom? what? The thing goes somewhere – or something is done to it (I take the ring, I want fish). The Russian name comes from an old word for "cause, reason"; the Latin accusativus means the same.

в и́ли на? · в = inside (в су́мке, в руке́, в до́ме); на = on top, on the surface (на столе́, на па́льце, на полу́). Some places are always на: на рабо́те, на по́чте, на у́лице, на уро́ке – learn them as chunks.

💡 Почему́ два паде́жа в одно́м уро́ке? Потому́ что они́ рабо́тают вме́сте: куда́? → кладу́ на стол · где? → лежи́т на столе́. · Why two cases in one lesson? Because they work as a pair: where to? → I put it on the table · where? → it lies on the table. Your body knows the difference before your head does.
