Nominative

Nominative: Subject of the sentence · Nominate, name · Name someone, something

Name your hands in Russian. Try to imitate the sounds the best you can. Repeat after me and Maya. Can you guess, what we say? I don't say anything important!

I say: "this is a hand, this is my hand, that is my right hand..."

Prepositional

Prepositional: Prepositions "на", "в (во)" · Рosition of a subject in/on an object · Preposition, position, location

Open and close your hand/hands, take an actual object in your hand/hands. Notice the way the endings change compared to the previous videos.

I say things like: "on the right hand, in the right hand, in, on, in the left hand ..."
Это ручка. Ручка на правой руке. На правой руке, в правой руке, на правой руке, в правой руке, на правой руке. Сейчас - на левой руке, в левой руке, на левой руке, в левой руке, на левой руке, на, в, на, в, на, в, на, в, на, в...
на правой руке, в правой руке, на левой руке, в левой руке, на этой руке и этой руке...
Это рука и это рука, это рука и это рука. На правой руке кольцо. Кольцо - на правой руке. На левой руке? Нет, нет кольца. Кольцо на правой руке. Не на левой, а на правой.

Have a look how Maya does the exercise, repeat after her:

Feel the "in-ness" and "on-ness", this feeling should become second nature to you. Mentally connect this change with the "in-ness" and "on-ness" of your hand/hands.

Can you imagine yourself being a Russian, can you feel the case, just a little bit? Try to mix the simple naming of your hand/hands with the expressing of the "in-ness" and "on-ness" of it/them. Can you distinguish these two concepts?

Genitive, Accusative

Start with the very short videos, all Maya says is: "from the right hand into the left hand, from the left hand into the right hand..." в левую руку, из левой руки в правую руку, из правой руки в левую руку... на руках, с рук, на руках, с рук... с одной руки на другую, с одной руки на другую...

Always repeat and say what you are doing. Feel the transition of the object. Feel "from-ness", "onto-ness" and "into-ness". Note the way the endings change compared to the previous exercises. Associate the new endings with the movement. Move the pen from the right hand into the left. Feel the movement of the object from one hand into another.

Watch how I mix all the cases:
Это ручка. Ручка на правой руке. На моей правой руке ручка.
На левой руке? - Нет. Не на левой, на правой.
С правой руки на левую руку. - Ручка на левой руке.
И с левой руки на правую руку. - Ручка на правой руке.

Revision

Move onto reading when you can confidently say all the things you have learned. It is time to start reading the subtitles.

• Look at the text and listen after you turn the subtitles on
• Don't be misled if it isn't the exact phrasing
• Check the way you read after the native speaker. Don't let the written word inhibit you.

Руками и губами

Make any action with your hand/hands or your arm/arms. Note that in Russian the same word is used for arm and hand. New endings will have a meaning of doing things with your hands. Feel "with-ness" and "by-ness" and mentally connect the sounds with the action. I say: "by/with my right/left hand, now by/with the right one".


Правой/левой рукой, сейчас правой...
Правой рукой, левой рукой, двумя руками.
Правой, левой, левой, правой...
Двумя руками, одной, другой, одной, другой...
Ручка, рука, и я пишу. Я пишу, пишу правой рукой, не левой, правой.

Dative

Dative: Give something to someone · Movement of a subject to/towards an object · Direction of a motion
The new endings will be for the dative case only. Try to associate it with motion towards the arm/hand. Feel "toward-ness".

• Spread your arms apart and move your right arm to the left one and then away from it
• Do the same with the left hand

If you choose to read subtitles don't bother about the way it is written in Russian. Still better, try not to put the subtitles on for some time. At some point I have added my head to the hands. Can you do what I do?

• Act out these actions in a different sequence.
• Say with which arm you are moving to(wards) or away from the other arm in Russian

If you are having any difficulty about what to say when you need to use the instrumental case, wave that hand a bit. If you did your previous exercise properly, the action should remind you of the correct case ending. Note the different preposition used here with genitive for "from-ness", but the endings for the genitive case are the same.

I say: "by my right hand to the left one, by my right hand from the left one..."

Nominative and genitive

Now you should have a better idea of the Russian sound system, structure of sentences and cases. Go to the previous videos and improvise.

• Reproduce what we do: try your best to feel the cases.
  
• Name the hands and describe the position and the movement of the pen without the videos
  
• Mix different actions and say in Russian what you are doing
  

You don't have to know about genitive case for negation now, but I could not help it. It was slip of the tongue! We Russians always use the genitive case just to say that the thing what should/could/might be there isn't there. I use genitive singular "ручки" (no any pen) for the word "ручка" (pen), just to tell you that I don't have the pen in my left hand.

• Nominative plural for "pу́ка – pу́ки" (more then one hand)
  
• Genitive singular for "pу́ка – pуки́" (deriving from hand) is written the same, but sound different.
  

The meaning of the word "pуки" is connected with the way it is pronounced. Even though the word "pуки" appears to be written the same way, it can be pronounced differently, depending on its meaning.
