- есть = there is / there are – «Сыр есть.» = There is cheese. Palms up!

Today's new word starts with Е:
- ЕСТЬ sounds «йесть» – a little «й» comes first. Not «эсть»!
- The same at the start of other words: е́хать («йе́хать»), е́дешь in «Ти́ше е́дешь…» (День 1).
- Like Я = «йа», Ё = «йо», Ю = «йу» (День 12) – Е = «йе».
- After a consonant the «й» goes: нет, на столе́ – just a soft sound (День 15).

Don't stroke a cat against the fur.
A cat likes to be stroked from the head to the tail. The other way – the fur stands up and the cat growls, like Scuffles. Russians say it about people too: don't annoy someone who is already cross – be gentle with them. English has the same picture: to rub someone up the wrong way. гла́дить = to stroke, про́тив = against, ше́рсти = of the fur (шерсть – the end changes like мышь → мы́ши!). Gesture: shake your finger on «не гладь», then stroke your own arm the right way, from the shoulder to the hand. (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)

- Есть = there is: «Молоко́ есть.» «У меня́ есть кот.» The word after «есть» does not change.
- Нет = there is no: the word after it changes its end – молоко́ → нет молока́, мышь → нет мы́ши, ла́па → нет ла́пы.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
ЕСТЬ is an old relative of English is, German ist, Latin est. 🌍
МОЛОКО́ and milk are old relatives too. 🥛
МАГАЗИ́Н = a shop – not a magazine! Both come from Arabic makhāzin = storehouses. English kept the paper one, Russian kept the shop. 🛒
ЧЕТЫ́РЕ – look: the letter Ч looks like a 4 (День 10). 4️⃣
Не гладь кота́ про́тив ше́рсти = don't rub someone up the wrong way – the same cat in two languages! 🐈
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Many examples first, the rule later. The student heard «Нет кота́!» on День 13 and «без кота́» on День 14; today «нет молока́, нет мы́ши, нет ла́пы» – the new end is shown, not explained. Learners must first notice a form in what they hear before they can learn it – the noticing hypothesis, Schmidt 1990. The rule comes later, after many examples (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- Show it – hide it. Showing a real thing on «есть» and hiding it on «нет» ties the new end to a body memory – the old Total Physical Response (Asher 1969).
- A gesture that matches the word. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
