День 17 из 37: Куда ты едешь?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 5 – маши́на, авто́бус, по́езд, велосипе́д, е́ду (е́хать) – and you can read them all!
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: open your fridge (or your bag) and say «Что в холоди́льнике? Сыр есть!» – and cross your arms: «Нет молока́!» 🧀✖
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Richard went to the shop for milk. Today we go too – by car, by bus, by train and by bicycle! 🚗🚌🚂🚲
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who goes by bus? Who goes by bicycle? 🚌🚲
- Where does Richard go – and why? 🥛
- Why does Scuffles growl at the end? 🐈
- Tap the words above to hear them.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable.
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🎁 New today – and you can read them:
- е́ду = I go (by car, bus, train, bicycle – with wheels). иду́ = I go on foot (Richard: «Я иду́ в магази́н!», День 16). Walk on the spot on «иду́», drive on «е́ду»!
- я е́ду · ты е́дешь · он, она́ е́дет – «Сли́нки е́дет на авто́бусе.» You read «Ти́ше е́дешь – да́льше бу́дешь» on День 13!
- на + the end -е: на маши́не, на авто́бусе, на по́езде, на велосипе́де – the same end as на столе́ (День 15). Just copy it.
🔁 Old friends – the places in today's story, with the gestures you already know:
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! Show the gesture of the transport on its loud syllable. 🤸
And you? «На чём вы е́дете? – На авто́бусе! / На маши́не! / На велосипе́де!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊 🌱 The seed of the day: на чём? = on what? (by what?) – the answer gets the end -е: авто́бус → на авто́бусе, по́езд → на по́езде, маши́на → на маши́не. You know this end from «на столе́», «в су́мке» (День 15). Scuffles says «на по́езд» – Natasha says «Нет! На по́езде.» Just copy it.
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: В гостя́х хорошо́, а до́ма лу́чше. 🏠
- Hold an invisible steering wheel: Би-би! Я е́ду на маши́не! 🚗
- How do you go to the shop? Я е́ду на авто́бусе! – or walk on the spot: Я иду́! 🚶
- Ask a friend (or your cat): Куда́ ты е́дешь? – В магази́н! 🛒
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Today's words are long – but every Russian word has only one loud syllable. The others are quick and quiet.
- ве-ло-си-ПЕ́Д – clap only on ПЕД. Not «ВЕ-ЛО-СИ-ПЕД» with four claps!
- ав-ТО́-бус (not «AU-to-bus») · ма-ШИ́-на (not «MA-shi-na») · ПО́-езд – the loud one comes first.
- Say the quiet syllables fast and small – like a train: ту-ту-ту-ТУ́!
- Bigger words from before: хо-ло-ДИ́ЛЬ-ник (День 16), по-ми-ДО́Р (День 6).
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, before you go out, hold an invisible steering wheel and say: «Би-би! Я е́ду на маши́не!» – or walk on the spot: «Я иду́ в магази́н!» 🚗🚶
That is the first minute of День 18. You already know it – so День 18 starts with a win.
«Би-би! Ту-ту! Дзинь-дзинь!» – every transport has its sound and its movement. Be the car, the bus, the train! 🚗🚌🚂🚲 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Маши́на – би-би! | turn the steering wheel, press the horn on БИ 🚗 |
| Авто́бус – стоп! | hold the strap, sway – then stop, one hand up on СТОП 🚌 |
| По́езд – ту-ту! | arms turn like wheels, pull the whistle on ТУ 🚂 |
| Велосипе́д – дзинь-дзинь! | pedal with your hands, ring the bell with your thumb on ДЗИНЬ 🚲 |
| Я е́ду! | sit, one flat hand goes forward and away on Е 💨 |
| Я иду́! | stand up and walk on the spot on ДУ 🚶 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then Natasha (or a friend) says only the sound – «Ту-ту!» – and you say the word: «По́езд!»
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 🚲 · 🚗 · 🚂 · 🚌 · 💨
- Yesterday comes back. Mix in four words from День 16: есть 👐 · молоко́ 🥛 · холоди́льник 🧊 · четы́ре 4️⃣.
е́ду / иду́ – two different words for «go»: е́ду with wheels, иду́ on foot. Your legs know the difference! 😄
Ви́дит Гре́ка – в ре́ке рак. 🦞
Су́нул Гре́ка ру́ку в ре́ку, ✋
Рак за ру́ку Гре́ку – цап! 😱
Greka went across the river, Greka sees – a crayfish in the river. Greka put his hand into the river – the crayfish grabbed Greka by the hand – snap!
A folk tongue twister – every Russian child knows it. Гре́ка = a man from Greece. Gesture: row a boat on Е́ХАЛ, hand over your eyes on ВИ́ДИТ, put your hand down «into the water» on СУ́НУЛ, snap your fingers like a claw on ЦАП. Е́хал = he went (with something – here a boat), like е́ду. Say it slowly first, then faster – the Р will thank you! You can read every word – but you don't have to learn it. Just say it and smile. 😊
Transport 1 – маши́на, самолёт, по́езд, авто́бус, парохо́д.
Today's words маши́на, авто́бус, по́езд. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
Today's words:
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
В ГОСТЯ́Х ХОРОШО́, А ДО́МА ЛУ́ЧШЕ.
It is nice to be a guest, but it is better at home.
Slinky went out on the bus – nice! – and then she ran home to her chair and purred. English says: East or West, home is best or There's no place like home. в гостя́х = visiting, as a guest (гость = a guest) · до́ма = at home («Я до́ма!», День 6) · лу́чше = better – you know it from «Одна́ голова́ хорошо́, а две лу́чше» (День 6)! Gesture: wave hello on «в гостя́х», hands make a roof over your head on «до́ма». (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)
Beep-beep! I'm going! I'm going by car! Here is a car. Here is a bus. And here is a train – choo-choo! Where is Slinky? – On the bus! Slinky is going by bus! Ding-ding! – Richard, where are you going? – To the shop! There is no milk! Richard is going by bicycle. – And me? I'm going by train! – Choo-choo?… Grrr! – Scuffles, you are not going anywhere. You are at home! Oh! Oh! Oh! Scuffles! No, no, no! Shoo! – Grrr… Slinky is home! Slinky, well done! It is nice to be a guest, but it is better at home. Well done! Bye!
- На чём? = by what? – на + the end -е: на авто́бусе, на по́езде, на маши́не, на велосипе́де.
- The same end as где? – на столе́, в су́мке (День 15). Just copy it.
- е́ду = with wheels · иду́ = on foot. я е́ду · ты е́дешь · он, она́ е́дет.
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
АВТО́БУС = auto + omnibus – the same word as bus, only longer. 🚌
МАШИ́НА = a car – and a machine! The same old word. 🚗
ВЕЛОСИПЕ́Д comes from French vélocipède = «fast foot» (Latin velox fast + pes foot). 🚲
ПО́ЕЗД – the same root as е́ду: a train is «the one that goes». 🚂
В гостя́х хорошо́, а до́ма лу́чше = East or West, home is best. 🏠
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The same end in a new place. The student met «на столе́, в су́мке» on День 15; today «на авто́бусе, на по́езде» – the same end with new words. Learners must first notice a form in what they hear before they can learn it – the noticing hypothesis, Schmidt 1990. The rule comes later, after many examples (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- A gesture that matches the word. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
