День 23 из 37: Какого цвета кошки ночью?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 9 – the seven colours of the rainbow and two more: кра́сный, ора́нжевый, жёлтый, зелёный, голубо́й, си́ний, фиоле́товый, бе́лый, чёрный – and you can read them all!
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: look at a calendar – «Сего́дня – …!» 📅 Thumb over your shoulder: «Вчера́ – …!» Hand forward: «За́втра – …!»
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And now look around you: what colours can you see? 🌈
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: Richard asks about colours. What is red? What is green? 🍅🥒
- What colour is Richard's tea? ☕
- What does Richard ask about the cats – and who takes the fish in the dark? 🐟
- Tap the words above to hear them.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable.
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🌈 The rainbow – new today, and you can read them:
⚪⚫ And two more – day and night:
- Two blues! голубо́й = light blue, like the sky (не́бо) · си́ний = dark blue, like the sea (мо́ре). For Russians these are two different colours. 🌊
- Today every colour goes with an он-word: помидо́р кра́сный, стака́н си́ний, хлеб бе́лый, чай чёрный. Most end in -ый – си́ний in -ий, голубо́й in -ой (the ending is loud).
- Како́го цве́та? = What colour? – one block. (цвет = colour.)
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! 🤸
- Ната́ша: Како́го цве́та помидо́р? 🍅
Сли́нки: Кра́сный! — Ната́ша: Да! Так! 😊
- Ната́ша: Како́го цве́та огуре́ц? 🥒
Ска́ффлз: Кра́сный! — Ната́ша: Нет! Зелёный. — Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… зелёный.
- Ри́чард: А мой чай – чёрный! ☕ — Ната́ша: Да! Ри́чард – молоде́ц!
And you? Point at something near you: «Како́го цве́та …? – Кра́сный! / Бе́лый! / Си́ний!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
Ве́чер. У́жин! 🍽️
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: Но́чью все ко́шки се́ры. 🌙🐈🐈
- Find three things at home and say their colour: «Помидо́р – кра́сный!» 🍅 «Хлеб – бе́лый!» 🍞 «Чай – чёрный!» ☕
- Point at a thing and ask a friend (or your cat): «Како́го цве́та …?»
- Show the rainbow with the gestures: кра́сный, ора́нжевый, жёлтый, зелёный, голубо́й, си́ний, фиоле́товый! 🌈
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Ё is always the loud syllable. No stress mark needed – Ё shows it by itself:
- зелЁный · жЁлтый · чЁрный · щЁлк.
- After Ж and Ч, Ё sounds like «О»: жёлтый = «жо́лтый», чёрный = «чо́рный».
- Many books print Е instead of Ё (зеленый, черный) – but you still say Ё! 😉
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, take three things from your kitchen and say: «Помидо́р – кра́сный! Огуре́ц – зелёный! Хлеб – бе́лый!» 🍅🥒🍞 – then show the rainbow with your hands: «Кра́сный, ора́нжевый, жёлтый…» 🌈
That is the first minute of День 24. You already know it – so День 24 starts with a win.
«Светофо́р!» – the traffic light. 🚦 Natasha calls a colour – you do what the light says. 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Кра́сный! – Стоп! | palm forward – freeze like a statue ✋ |
| Жёлтый! – Жди! | stand on your toes – ready… 🦶 |
| Зелёный! – Иди́! | walk on the spot, swing your arms 🚶 |
| Кра́сный! Зелёный! Жёлтый! … | mixed up, faster and faster 🚦 |
| Чёрный! – Ночь! | both hands over your eyes 🌙 |
| Бе́лый! – День! | hands away – eyes wide open, a big smile ☀️ |
| Ска́ффлз! Кра́сный! Нет, нет, нет! | shake one finger – and laugh 😄 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then a friend calls the colours – and you do it.
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the colour. Mixed order: 🐥 · 🌊 · ✋ · ❄️ · 🕊️ · 🌱
- Yesterday comes back. Mix in four words from День 22: вчера́ 👈 · сего́дня 👇 · за́втра 👉 · неде́ля 👏.
A Russian traffic light is a светофо́р – «the light carrier». And a free road with only green lights is a зелёная у́лица. 😄
Не дава́й дождя́, 🌧️
Дава́й со́лнышка, ☀️
Колоко́лнышка! 🔔
Rainbow, rainbow arc, don't give us rain – give us the sun, the little bell-sun!
A folk rhyme – children shout it to the sky after rain. дуга́ = an arc, the shape of a rainbow; со́лнышко = a sweet word for со́лнце, the sun. Gestures: draw a big arc over your head on ДУГА́, rain falls with your fingers and you shake your head on ДОЖДЯ́, a big round sun with your arms on СО́Л, ring a little bell on КО́Л. You don't have to learn it – just say it and smile. 😊
где сиди́т фаза́н. 🌈
Every hunter wants to know where the pheasant sits.
A folk saying every Russian child knows. The first letters are the colours of the rainbow, in order: Кра́сный · Ора́нжевый · Жёлтый · Зелёный · Голубо́й · Си́ний · Фиоле́товый. (English children say Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.) Say it and show the seven colour gestures, one on each word. You can read every word – but you don't have to learn it. Just say it and smile. 😊
Colours 1 – twelve colours: кра́сный, зелёный, жёлтый…
Today's colours of the rainbow. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
What colour is it? – Э́то кра́сный цвет? – Да! / – Нет, э́то не…
Today's colours – answer before the video does. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Is it white or black? – Richard answers: ни…, ни…, а… 😄
Today's colours – and ё is always loud: чёрный. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
🌈 The rainbow: КРА́СНЫЙ · ОРА́НЖЕВЫЙ · ЖЁЛТЫЙ · ЗЕЛЁНЫЙ · ГОЛУБО́Й · СИ́НИЙ · ФИОЛЕ́ТОВЫЙ
⚪⚫ And more: БЕ́ЛЫЙ · ЧЁРНЫЙ · СЕ́РЫЙ · ЦВЕТ · РА́ДУГА · НОЧЬ
Three endings: кра́снЫЙ · си́нИЙ · голубО́Й
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
НО́ЧЬЮ ВСЕ КО́ШКИ СЕ́РЫ.
A flower is «a little colour». Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
At night all cats are grey.
The answer to Richard's question! Scuffles is ginger, Slinky is grey-brown – but in the dark both look grey, and nobody can see who took the fish. Russians say it when in the dark you can't see the differences – or the faults: everybody looks the same. се́ры = grey (a short form of се́рый, for many). English says the same: All cats are grey in the dark. Gesture: cover your eyes on «но́чью», draw two cat ears on your head on «ко́шки». (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)
Evening. Supper! – Natasha, I'm learning colours. What colour is the tomato? – The tomato is red. – And the orange? – The orange is orange. The banana is yellow. The cucumber is green. The glass is dark blue. And this glass is light blue. – Dark blue? Light blue? – Dark blue is like the sea. Light blue is like the sky. The aubergine is violet. – Oh! Like a rainbow! – White bread. And black bread. – And my tea is black! – Scuffles, what colour is the cucumber? – Red! – No! The cucumber is green. – Grrr… – Miaow! – Natasha, and what colour are cats at night? – Night. Where is Slinky? Where is Scuffles? – I don't know! Click! Scuffles! No, no, no! Shoo! – Grrr… Slinky, well done! – So what colour are cats at night? – At night all cats are grey. Well done! Bye!
- Како́го цве́та …? = What colour is …?
- No verb needed: «Помидо́р – кра́сный.» = The tomato is red.
- With an он-word: кра́сный, си́ний, голубо́й.
- голубо́й = light blue (sky) · си́ний = dark blue (sea) – two colours!
- Ё is always loud: зелёный, жёлтый, чёрный.
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
КРА́СНЫЙ once meant «beautiful» – so Кра́сная пло́щадь (Red Square) was first «the beautiful square». ✨
ОРА́НЖЕВЫЙ – from the orange fruit (French orange), like in English. 🍊
ГОЛУБО́Й and го́лубь (a dove) – the same old root: the colour of a dove's neck. 🕊️
Two blues: English has one blue, Russian has two – голубо́й and си́ний. Scientists found that Russians see the difference between them a little faster (Winawer 2007). 🔬
ЧЁРНЫЙ ЧАЙ = black tea, like in English · ЧЁРНЫЙ ХЛЕБ = dark rye bread – every Russian table has it. 🍞
Но́чью все ко́шки се́ры = All cats are grey in the dark.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Colours with он-words only – the rule tomorrow. One new thing at a time, so the working memory is not overloaded (Sweller, cognitive load). Today the colours, tomorrow the endings (★ День 24).
- Two blues. Russian speakers tell голубо́й from си́ний faster than English speakers tell light blue from dark blue – Winawer et al. 2007, PNAS – Russian blues. So the page gives them two cards and two gestures.
- Show it with your hands. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- Show it with your body. Total Physical Response – the learner moves while hearing the word – Asher 1969. The traffic light game is TPR at its simplest.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- Chunks first, rules later. «Како́го цве́та?» is heard and used as one block today (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
