День 27 из 37: Без шапки?!
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 5 – шарф, перча́тки, сапоги́, хо́лодно, тепло́ – and you can read them all!
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: put your pen in your bag – «Кладу́ ру́чку в су́мку. – Ру́чка в су́мке!» 👜 – then your ring (or a ribbon): «Надева́ю кольцо́ на па́лец. – Кольцо́ на па́льце!» 💍
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And today we put on a lot more than a ring… Brr, it's cold outside! 🥶
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: what does Natasha put on? What does Richard not want to put on? 🧢
- What does Scuffles bring Richard – boots or slippers? 😄
- Tap the words above to hear them.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable.
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🧣 Warm things – new today, and you can read them:
🌡️ Cold – warm:
- Надева́ю … (День 26) + a warm thing: надева́ю шарф, надева́ю сапоги́, надева́ю перча́тки – and a -а word gets -у: надева́ю ша́пку, ку́ртку.
- На у́лице хо́лодно. = It's cold outside. До́ма тепло́. = It's warm at home. No «it is» in Russian! 😊
- One glove = перча́тка, two = перча́тки. One boot = сапо́г, two = сапоги́ – the loud syllable jumps to the end.
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! 🤸
And you? Look at your friend (or your cat): «Без ша́пки! Без ша́рфа! Без перча́ток!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: Тепло́ косте́й не ло́мит! 🧣
- Put on something warm and say: «Надева́ю ша́пку! Надева́ю шарф! Тепло́!» 🧢🧣
- Open the window for a second: «Ой! На у́лице хо́лодно!» 🥶 – shut it: «До́ма тепло́!» 🏠
- Ask a friend (or your cat): «Где твоя́ ша́пка?» – and say: «Без ша́пки? Нет!» ☝️
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Е without stress sounds almost like И:
- тепло́ = «типло́» – the loud syllable is ЛО́ 🔥
- перча́тки = «пирча́тки» 🧤
- The same in метро́ = «митро́», телефо́н = «тилифо́н», сего́дня = «сиво́дня».
- Only the loud Е is a clear Е: ле́то, не́бо, де́ти.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, before you go out, put on your warm things and say each one: «Надева́ю ку́ртку! Надева́ю ша́пку! Надева́ю шарф!» 🧥🧢🧣 – then step outside: «Хо́лодно!» 🥶 and back in: «Тепло́!» 😊
That is the first minute of День 28. You already know it – so День 28 starts with a win.
«Одева́емся!» – let's get dressed! 🧥 Natasha says what she puts on – you put it on too, with your hands, as fast as you can. 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| На у́лице хо́лодно! Бр-р-р! | hug yourself and shiver 🥶 |
| Надева́ю сапоги́! | pull tall boots up to your knees 👢 |
| Надева́ю ку́ртку! | arms into the sleeves – zip it up 🧥 |
| Надева́ю ша́пку! | pull the hat over your ears 🧢 |
| Надева́ю шарф! | wrap it round your neck 🧣 |
| Надева́ю перча́тки! | wiggle all ten fingers 🧤 |
| Тепло́! | palms on your cheeks – a big smile 😊 |
| Сапоги́! Шарф! Ша́пка! … | mixed up, faster and faster 🌀 |
| Ска́ффлз? – Мя́у! Мне тепло́! | cat's ears with two fingers – a cat doesn't need a hat 🐈 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then a friend calls the things – and you put them on.
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 🧤 · 🥶 · 👢 · 😊 · 🧣
- Yesterday comes back. Mix in four words from День 26: кладу́ 📥 · надева́ю 🧤 · упа́ло ⬇️ · ме́сто 🪑.
надева́ю (День 26) has a gesture of its own – pulling on a glove. Today's перча́тки = wiggle the fingers, so the two never get mixed up. 😉
Купи́л ло́шадь без хвоста́, 🐴
Сел он за́дом наперёд 🔄
И пое́хал в огоро́д! 🥕
Silly Ivanushka bought a horse without a tail, sat on it back to front – and rode off into the vegetable garden!
A folk rhyme. без хвоста́ – без + -а, like today's без ша́пки! Gestures: tap your forehead on ПРО-СТО-ТА́ (silly!), give coins on КУ-ПИ́Л, a tail behind your back – then shake your head on ХВО-СТА́, turn round on НА-ПЕ-РЁД, ride a horse on О-ГО-РО́Д. You don't have to learn it – just say it and smile. 😊
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
🧣 Today's words: ШАРФ · ПЕРЧА́ТКИ · САПОГИ́ · ХО́ЛОДНО · ТЕПЛО́
👕 Clothes you know: ША́ПКА · КУ́РТКА · ТА́ПКИ · НОСКИ́
🧥 And more clothes – read them! ПАЛЬТО́ · СВИ́ТЕР · Ю́БКА · РУБА́ШКА · ПИЖА́МА
🌡️ Without…: БЕЗ ША́ПКИ · БЕЗ ША́РФА · БЕЗ КУ́РТКИ · БЕЗ ПЕРЧА́ТОК
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
ТЕПЛО́ КОСТЕ́Й НЕ ЛО́МИТ!
And the opposite: хо́лодно → холо́дный (cold) → холоди́льник (День 16 – the fridge, «the cold-maker»). Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Warmth doesn't break your bones.
The answer to the title! Richard didn't want a hat – and Natasha said this. Warm clothes never hurt you, so put the hat on. Russian grandmothers say it every winter, when a child runs out without a hat or a scarf. English says something close: Better safe than sorry. ко́сти = bones (одна́ кость), ло́мит = breaks, makes ache. Gesture: hug yourself warmly on «тепло́», shake your finger on «не ло́мит». (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)
Oh! It's cold outside! I'm going to the shop. I put on my boots. I put on my jacket. I put on my hat. I put on my scarf. I put on my gloves. Warm! – Natasha, I'm going to the shop too! – Richard, where is your jacket? Where is your hat? – A hat? I don't want it! I'm not cold! – Miaow! – Scuffles, no! Slippers are for home. Outside – boots! – Grrr… – Richard, without a jacket? Without a hat? No! It's cold outside! – Brrr… miaow! – All right, all right… – Warmth doesn't break your bones! Bye, cats! The cats are at home. It's warm at home! Well done! Bye!
- Надева́ю … = I put on …: надева́ю шарф, сапоги́, перча́тки – and ша́пку, ку́ртку (-а → -у).
- На у́лице хо́лодно. До́ма тепло́. – no «it is».
- без … – just listen: без ша́пки, без ку́ртки, без ша́рфа.
- Е without stress ≈ и: тепло́ = «типло́».
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
ШАРФ came into Russian from German Schärpe (a sash), maybe through Polish szarfa – the same family as French écharpe. 🧣
ПЕРЧА́ТКА comes from the old word перст – a finger. A glove is «a finger-thing»! 🧤
САПО́Г is a very old word – Russian soldiers and peasants wore сапоги́ for centuries. 👢
ХОЛОДИ́ЛЬНИК (День 16) = «the cold-maker» – from хо́лод (cold). 🧊
Тепло́ косте́й не ло́мит ≈ Better safe than sorry.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Show it with your hands. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- Show it with your body. Total Physical Response – the learner moves while hearing the word – Asher 1969. Getting dressed is TPR at its simplest: «Надева́ю ша́пку!» – and the hands put it on.
- Real things, real place. Words learned with the real objects, in the place where they are used (the door, the coat hooks), are easier to recall there later (context-dependent memory, Godden · Baddeley 1975).
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- Chunks first, rules later. «без ша́пки» is heard and used as one block today, like «нет молока́» on День 16; the rule comes after it has been met several times (Wray 2002, formulaic language; Sweller, one new thing at a time).
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
