День 28 из 37: Когда лето?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 6 – ме́сяц, год, зима́, весна́, ле́то, о́сень – and you can read them all! The twelve months you only hear and read today.
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: put on your warm things and say each one – «Надева́ю ку́ртку! Надева́ю ша́пку! Надева́ю шарф!» 🧥🧢🧣 – step outside: «Хо́лодно!» 🥶 – and back in: «Тепло́!» 😊
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And why is it so cold? Look at the calendar… 📅
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: which month is it now? Is it warm or cold? 🌧️
- When is summer? How many months does Richard count? 🖐️
- What does Scuffles do with the calendar at night? 😄
- Tap the words above to hear them.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable.
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🍂 The four seasons – new today, and you can read them:
📅 Month and year:
- Three months – one season. Двена́дцать ме́сяцев – оди́н год. = Twelve months – one year.
- Сейча́с ноя́брь. = It's November now. No «it is» – like «На у́лице хо́лодно» (День 27). 😊
- Когда́ ле́то? – «Пе́рвого ию́ня!» = on the first of June. Just listen – the seed of the day tells you more.
📅 The twelve months – just listen and read, you don't have to learn them today:
❄️ дека́брь · янва́рь · февра́ль
🌱 март · апре́ль · май
☀️ ию́нь · ию́ль · а́вгуст
🍂 сентя́брь · октя́брь · ноя́брь
Russians write the months with a small letter: янва́рь, not Янва́рь. 😉 🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! 🤸
- Ната́ша: Когда́ ле́то? ☀️
Сли́нки: Пе́рвого ию́ня! — Ната́ша: Да! Так! 😊
Ска́ффлз: Пе́рвого ию́нь! — Ната́ша: Нет! Пе́рвого ию́ня. — Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… пе́рвого ию́ня.
- Ри́чард: А пе́рвого ию́ня – День дете́й! 🎈 — Ната́ша: Да! А мы все – де́ти! 😄
And you? «Когда́ зима́? – Пе́рвого декабря́!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: Не всё коту́ ма́сленица! 🥞
- Look at your calendar (or your phone): «Сейча́с …!» – find your month in the list above. 📅
- And the season: «О́сень!» (or зима́, весна́, ле́то) – with its gesture. 🍂
- Ask a friend (or your cat): «Когда́ ле́то?» – and answer: «Пе́рвого ию́ня!» ☀️
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Two months – only one sound is different:
- ию́нь ☀️ – ию́ль ☀️ – soft Н or soft Л at the end. Listen and say them slowly.
- ИЮ = «и-йу»: и-ю́нь, и-ю́ль – two syllables, the loud one is Ю́.
- The Ь at the end makes the sound soft – like in янва́рь, февра́ль, апре́ль, ноя́брь.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, look at a calendar and say: «Сейча́с …!» (your month) 📅 – and the season with its gesture. Then the year round with your hands: «Зима́! Весна́! Ле́то! О́сень!» ❄️🌱☀️🍂
That is the first minute of День 29. You already know it – so День 29 starts with a win.
«Зима́, весна́, ле́то, о́сень!» – the year goes round with your hands. ⭕ 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Зима́! | make a snowball, pat-pat ❄️ |
| Весна́! | one hand rises slowly from the floor 🌱 |
| Ле́то! | fan your face – it's hot ☀️ |
| О́сень! | one hand falls like a leaf, zigzag 🍂 |
| Дека́брь, янва́рь, февра́ль – зима́! | three claps – then the snowball |
| Март, апре́ль, май – весна́! | three claps – then the little shoot |
| Ию́нь, ию́ль, а́вгуст – ле́то! | three claps – then fan your face |
| Сентя́брь, октя́брь, ноя́брь – о́сень! | three claps – then the leaf falls |
| Двена́дцать ме́сяцев – оди́н год! | both arms – one big circle over your head ⭕ |
| Ска́ффлз, а ты? – Ле́то, ле́то, ле́то! – Нет! О́сень! | fan, fan, fan – then shake your finger and let the leaf fall 🐈 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then a friend calls a month – and you show its season.
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: ☀️ · ⭕ · ❄️ · 🍂 · 📅 · 🌱
- Yesterday comes back. Mix in four words from День 27: шарф 🧣 · перча́тки 🧤 · сапоги́ 👢 · тепло́ 😊.
ле́то = fan your face; тепло́ (День 27) = palms on your cheeks; день (День 22) = the sun across the sky. Three different gestures – they never get mixed up. 😉

🍂 Today's words: ЗИМА́ · ВЕСНА́ · ЛЕ́ТО · О́СЕНЬ · МЕ́СЯЦ · ГОД
📅 The months:
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
НЕ ВСЁ КОТУ́ МА́СЛЕНИЦА!
Natasha says: when we stop being children, we stop learning – because then we think we know everything. You want to learn – so you are a child too! 1 June is the one day we celebrate on this site. 🎈
The day was set up in November 1949 by the Women's International Democratic Federation; the first one was on 1 June 1950, in 51 countries. Russia and many other countries keep it on 1 June. (The UN has another one – Всеми́рный день ребёнка, 20 November.)
ле́то → ле́том (in summer) · зима́ → зимо́й · весна́ → весно́й · о́сень → о́сенью – «Когда́?» in one word!
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
It's not always Pancake Week for the cat.
The answer to the title! Scuffles wants summer every day – but now it is November. Ма́сленица is the merry week at the end of winter (February or March): pancakes, butter (ма́сло – that is where the name comes from), songs and fun. After it comes the long fast before Easter – no butter at all. The full saying: «Не всё коту́ ма́сленица – бу́дет и вели́кий пост». Russians say it when the good days end, or to someone who thinks the easy life will last for ever. English: All good things come to an end. коту́ = for the cat (кот). Gesture: lick your lips on «коту́ ма́сленица», shake your finger on «не всё». (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)
Drip-drip-drip… Oh! Rain. It's cold outside. Here is the calendar. It's November now. Autumn. December, January, February – winter! – Brrr! March, April, May – spring! June, July, August – summer! – Miaow! September, October, November – autumn. – Grrr… Twelve months – one year! – Brrr! Natasha, when is summer? – On the first of June! It's November now! – Grrr… – Miaow! – It's not always Pancake Week for the cat! Well done! Bye!
- Four seasons: зима́, весна́, ле́то, о́сень – three months each.
- Двена́дцать ме́сяцев – оди́н год.
- Сейча́с ноя́брь. – no «it is».
- The months have a small letter: янва́рь, май.
- Когда́? – just listen: пе́рвого ию́ня, пе́рвого ма́я.
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
The months are old Roman names – the same as in English: МАРТ ~ March (Mars), ИЮ́ЛЬ ~ July (Julius Caesar), А́ВГУСТ ~ August (Augustus). 🏛️
СЕНТЯ́БРЬ – from Latin septem, seven – but it is the 9th month! The old Roman year began in March. 🤔
МЕ́СЯЦ = a month and the crescent 🌙 – but the full moon 🌕 is ЛУНА́. English: month ← moon.
МА́СЛЕНИЦА comes from ма́сло – butter. 🧈🥞
Не всё коту́ ма́сленица ≈ All good things come to an end.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Six words – not eighteen. Twelve month names on top of six new words is too much for one day. One new thing at a time, so the working memory is not overloaded (Sweller, cognitive load). The months are heard and read today – learned later, when they come back.
- Show it with your hands. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- Show it with your body. Total Physical Response – the learner moves while hearing the word – Asher 1969.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- Chunks first, rules later. «пе́рвого ию́ня» is heard as one block today, like «нет молока́» (День 16) and «без ша́пки» (День 27) – the same ending again; the rule comes after it has been met many times (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
