★ Today's rule – 30 seconds. You heard both for many days («Сок в стака́не», «Ска́ффлз, куда́? – В су́мку!»). Now you see them – two questions, two endings:
- где? – the thing is there, it does not move: в / на + -е: на столе́ · в су́мке · на па́льце · в руке́ (a rebel: на полу́)
- куда́? – the thing goes there: в / на + the word as it is: на стол · на па́лец · на пол – only она́-words change -а → -у: в су́мку · в ру́ку · на по́лку
Listen to the end of the word – and you know if the thing is there or is going there. Scuffles says «кольцо́ на па́лец» – you know better now. 😄 (Где? = предло́жный паде́ж, prepositional · Куда́? = вини́тельный паде́ж, accusative – the names are for later.)

In some words the loud syllable jumps when the ending changes:

- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪

A folk rhyme – Russian mums play it with their babies. на доро́жку – куда́? → -у, like «Ру́ку – на го́лову!»; упадёт = it will fall, like упа́ло. Gestures: stroke the back of your hand on КИ́, one clap and hide your hands behind your back on БРЫСЬ, shake your finger on СА-ДИ́СЬ, two fingers walk on your arm on ПОЙ-ДЁТ, the fingers trip and fall on У-ПА-ДЁТ – Ой! With a friend or a child: one holds the hands out, the other strokes them – on «брысь!» hide your hands fast. Who is quicker? You don't have to learn it – just say it and smile. 😊

The answer to the day's mess! Richard's pen lay on the chair, his book on the floor – and the ring fell. Natasha put each thing in its place, and everything was found. Russians say it when they tidy up – and when someone can't find something because it was never put back. ка́ждый = every, вещь = a thing, свой = one's own. ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English uses two little words: in – into, on – onto. Russian uses one little word and changes the end: в су́мке (in) – в су́мку (into). 🎯
КУДА́ and the old English whither (= where to?) – English lost it, Russian kept it! 🧭
КЛАД (a treasure) comes from класть – a treasure is something someone put away. 💰
Надева́ю a ring, a hat, a coat – but people dress a person: ма́ма одева́ет ребёнка. Even Russians mix them up! 😄
У ка́ждой ве́щи – своё ме́сто = A place for everything, and everything in its place.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The ending must carry the meaning. In the tap quiz only the end of the word tells you if the thing «is there» or «goes there» – structured input, the learner must use the form to understand (VanPatten · processing instruction).
- A short rule after many meetings. Где? / куда́? were heard for weeks («Сок в стака́не», «Ска́ффлз, куда́? – В су́мку!»); today the rule takes 30 seconds. Short explicit teaching works better than none – 49 studies – Norris · Ortega 2000.
- Noticing. The blue and red endings make the difference visible – Schmidt 1990, noticing.
- Move or freeze. The body feels «moving» (куда́?) and «not moving» (где?) before the head knows the rule – Total Physical Response, Asher 1969; gestures with words – Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.

- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
