День 18 из 37: Хочу матрёшку!
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 5 – матрёшка, сувени́р, самова́р, ло́жка, пода́рок – and you can read them all!
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: hold an invisible steering wheel – «Би-би! Я е́ду на маши́не!» – or walk on the spot: «Я иду́ в магази́н!» 🚗🚶
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And what do we buy in the shop today? A Russian souvenir! 🪆
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: how many dolls are inside the big matryoshka? 🪆🪆🪆
- What does Natasha want from the shop? 🎁
- Why does Scuffles growl at the end? 🐈
- Tap the words above to hear them.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable.
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🎁 New today – and you can read them:
- матрёшка – a Russian wooden doll; inside it – another doll, and another… ма́ленькая матрёшка = a little matryoshka.
- ло́жки – Russians eat with spoons, and they also play wooden spoons like a drum: «Ло́жки игра́ют!»
- Хочу́ матрёшку! – after «хочу́» the end -а changes to -у – like «Хочу́ ры́бу!» (День 5). Just copy it – the rule comes tomorrow.
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! Show the gesture of the thing on its loud syllable. 🤸
And you? «Что вы хоти́те? – Хочу́ матрёшку! / Хочу́ ло́жку! / Хочу́ чай!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊 🌱 The seed of the day: хочу́ + the thing – an -а word changes its end to -у: матрёшка → хочу́ матрёшку, ло́жка → хочу́ ло́жку, ры́ба → хочу́ ры́бу (День 5, День 10). Other words stay the same: хочу́ чай, хочу́ пода́рок. Scuffles says «хочу́ матрёшка» – Natasha says «Нет! Матрёшку.» Just copy it – the rule comes tomorrow.
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: Мал золотни́к, да до́рог. ✨
- Open a little box (or your hands): Что там? – Матрёшка! 🪆
- Go to the shop on the spot: Я иду́ в магази́н! – and say what you want: Хочу́ матрёшку! 🛒
- Ask a friend (or your cat): Что ты хо́чешь? – Хочу́ ры́бу! 🐟
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Ё always carries the loud syllable. If you see Ё, you know where the stress is!
- мат-РЁШ-ка – clap on РЁШ. ещЁ, ёж, мёд, моЁ, твоЁ.
- Ё = «йо» at the start (ёж = «йож»), and after a consonant it makes it soft: матрёшка = «матрьо́шка».
- ⚠ Russian books and signs often write е instead of ё: «матрешка». Russians still say «матрёшка» – now you know why we always print the dots.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, open your hands like a present and say: «Вот пода́рок!» – then say what you want: «Хочу́ матрёшку!» (or «Хочу́ чай!») 🎁☕
That is the first minute of День 19. You already know it – so День 19 starts with a win.
«Больша́я – ма́ленькая!» – you are the matryoshka! Start big, then get smaller and smaller – and then jump up big again. 🪆 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Вот матрёшка – больша́я! | stand tall, arms wide, loud voice on ША́ 🪆 |
| А в матрёшке – ещё матрёшка! | twist the top half of the doll off on РЁШ 🤲 |
| Ма́ленькая! | bend your knees, hands smaller, on МА́ 🔽 |
| Ещё ма́ленькая! | crouch down low, quieter, on ЩЁ 🔽 |
| Ма-а-аленькая! | curl up tiny, whisper, on МА́ 🤏 |
| Оп! – Больша́я! | jump up, arms wide, loud, on ОП 🙌 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then Natasha (or a friend) only shows – big or small – and you say the word: «Больша́я!» – «Ма́ленькая!»
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 🥄 · 🎁 · 🪆 · ☕ · ✨
- Yesterday comes back. Mix in four words from День 17: маши́на 🚗 · авто́бус 🚌 · по́езд 🚂 · велосипе́д 🚲.
больша́я / ма́ленькая end in -ая – like пра́вая / ле́вая (День 12): матрёшка is an она́-word. Your body knows: big = tall and loud, little = small and quiet. 😄
И соса́ла су́шку. 🥯
Sasha was walking along the road and sucking a sushka.
A folk tongue twister – every Russian child knows it. Са́ша = a name (Alexander or Alexandra). шоссе́ = a big road (say «шоссэ́»). су́шка = a little dry ring of bread – Russians eat them with tea from the самова́р! Gesture: walk on the spot on ШЛА, draw a long road with your hand on ШОССЕ́, make a little ring with your fingers on СУ́ШКУ. Ш = «sh», С = «s» – don't mix them! Say it slowly first, then faster. You can read every word – but you don't have to learn it. Just say it and smile. 😊
Russian souvenir – Natasha teaches Richard with bags and matryoshkas: паке́т в паке́те, матрёшка в матрёшке, са́мая ма́ленькая… 🪆
Today's words матрёшка and сувени́р – and «Хочу́ матрёшку!» One video a day, or all six. Tap a number – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
Today's words: МАТРЁШКА · СУВЕНИ́Р · САМОВА́Р · ЛО́ЖКА · ПОДА́РОК · СУВЕНИ́РЫ · ЛО́ЖКИ · ЕЩЁ

👀 And the proverb of the day:
МАЛ ЗОЛОТНИ́К, ДА ДО́РОГ.
A zolotnik is small, but precious.
The tiniest matryoshka is the dearest one – Natasha holds it on her palm. A золотни́к was a very small old Russian gold coin and a tiny weight (about 4 grams) – from зо́лото (gold). мал = ма́ленький (small) · до́рог = дорого́й (dear, precious) · да here = but. Russians say it about a small thing – or a small person – that is worth a lot. English says: Good things come in small packages. Gesture: pinch your fingers tiny on «мал», hand on your heart on «до́рог». (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)
What's in there? A matryoshka! And in the matryoshka – another matryoshka! A ti-i-iny matryoshka! Here are souvenirs: a matryoshka, a samovar, a spoon. A samovar. Tea in the samovar. The spoons are playing! – Natasha, I'm going to the shop. What do you want? – I want a present! – What kind? – I want a matryoshka! Where is the little matryoshka? In the samovar? – No! In the cup? – No! Scuffles! No, no, no! A matryoshka is not a mouse! Shoo! – Grrr… Slinky, well done! A zolotnik is small, but precious. – Natasha, here is a present! – What's in it? A cat-matryoshka! Thank you, Richard! Richard, well done! Well done! Bye!
- Хочу́ + a thing: an -а word changes to -у: матрёшка → хочу́ матрёшку, ло́жка → хочу́ ло́жку.
- Other words stay the same: хочу́ чай, хочу́ пода́рок, хочу́ самова́р.
- You heard it on День 5 and 10 («Хочу́ ры́бу!»). Just copy it – the rule comes tomorrow.
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
МАТРЁШКА comes from the old woman's name Матрёна – a big, kind village mother with many children inside. 🪆
САМОВА́Р = сам (self) + вари́ть (to boil) – «the self-boiler». ☕
СУВЕНИ́Р = French souvenir – «to remember». 🎁
ПОДА́РОК comes from дар (a gift) – an old relative of donation and donor. 🎀
Мал золотни́к, да до́рог = Good things come in small packages. ✨
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Heard many times – the rule comes later. «Хочу́ ры́бу» was heard on День 5 and read on День 10; today «Хочу́ матрёшку» – the same end with new words; the 30-second rule comes on День 19. Learners must first notice a form in what they hear before they can learn it – the noticing hypothesis, Schmidt 1990. Chunks first, rules after (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- A gesture that matches the word. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- Big and small with the whole body. Total Physical Response – the learner moves while hearing the word – Asher 1969.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
