День 19 из 37: Хочу кашу!
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 5 – ка́ша, суп, таре́лка, обе́д, беру́ – and you can read them all!
🔤 Бу́квы дня · Letters of the day: none. You know all 33 letters. 🎉 Today – ★ a rule in 30 seconds.
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Yesterday's homework: open your hands like a present – «Вот пода́рок!» – and say what you want: «Хочу́ матрёшку!» (or «Хочу́ чай!») 🎁☕
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And what do we want now? Lunch! 🍲
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: what does Richard want – суп or ка́ша? 🍲
- Who sits on Richard's chair? 🐈
- Who brings the spoon just in time? 🥄
- Tap the words above to hear them.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. The movement falls on the loud syllable.
Tap the word to hear it. Tap the picture to open the word in the dictionary.
🎁 New today – and you can read them:
- ка́ша – porridge: oats, buckwheat, rice… cooked in milk or water. Russians eat it every day.
- обе́д – the big meal in the middle of the day (lunch, dinner): often суп first, then the rest.
- беру́ = I take (the dictionary word is брать – to take). Беру́ таре́лку – the end -а changes to -у, like «Хочу́ матрёшку!» (День 18).
🔁 Old friends – from today's story, with the gestures you already know:
👂 Listen first – then read it. You can read every word! Show the gesture of the thing on its loud syllable. 🤸
And you? «Что вы берёте? – Беру́ ка́шу! / Беру́ таре́лку! / Беру́ суп!» – aloud, or just in your head. Both count. 😊
★ Today's rule – 30 seconds. You heard it on День 5 and 10 («Хочу́ ры́бу!») and on День 18 («Хочу́ матрёшку!»). Now you see it:
- After хочу́, беру́, люблю́ a word that ends in -а changes its end to -у: ка́ша → хочу́ ка́шу · таре́лка → беру́ таре́лку · ры́ба → люблю́ ры́бу.
- The other words stay the same: хочу́ суп · беру́ хлеб · хочу́ чай · беру́ молоко́.
That's all. Scuffles says «беру́ таре́лка» – you know better now. 😄
Say the story aloud, with the actions. Then play: do the action – say the word. Mix them up!
Бом! Бом! Обе́д! 🥄🍲
👀 read it and say it – the proverb of the day: Дорога́ ло́жка к обе́ду. 🥄
- Bang a spoon on a pot (or clap): Бом! Бом! Обе́д! 🥄
- Take a plate and a spoon: Беру́ таре́лку! Беру́ ло́жку! 🍽️
- Ask a friend (or your cat): Что ты хо́чешь? – Хочу́ ка́шу! / Хочу́ суп! 🥣
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Round your lips to the very end. English speakers let the last sound fade into «uh» – in Russian the last У is short but clear, owl lips 🦉 (День 4).
- ка́шА – ка́шУ · ры́бА – ры́бУ · таре́лкА – таре́лкУ – one sound changes, and it is grammar!
- бе-РУ́ – here У is loud too. Беру́ ло́жку – two У: one loud, one short.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪
Tomorrow, at your table, take a plate and a spoon and say: «Беру́ таре́лку! Беру́ ло́жку!» – then: «Хочу́ ка́шу!» (or «Хочу́ суп!») 🍽️🥄
That is the first minute of День 20. You already know it – so День 20 starts with a win.
«Беру́ ло́жку!» – lay the table with your hands! Natasha says what she takes and shows it – you take it too. 🍽️ 👂 Listen and play – you can read every line!
| Say | Do |
|---|---|
| Беру́ таре́лку! | hold a plate flat on both palms on РЕЛ 🍽️ |
| Беру́ ло́жку! | pick up a spoon with two fingers on ЛОЖ 🥄 |
| Беру́ ка́шу! | stir the porridge in the pot on КА 🥣 |
| Беру́ суп! | ladle soup into the plate on СУП 🍲 |
| Беру́ хлеб! | break a loaf with both hands on ХЛЕБ 🍞 |
| Беру́ ры́бу… – Мя́у! | reach for the fish – a cat's paw swipes it first! 🐟🐈 |
- Play it three times – a little faster each time. Then Natasha (or a friend) only shows – and you say: «Беру́ ка́шу!» – «Беру́ суп!»
- Gesture → word. Don't look at the cards. Make a gesture – say the word. Mixed order: 🍽️ · 🕐 · 🥣 · ✋ · 🍲
- Yesterday comes back. Mix in four words from День 18: матрёшка 🪆 · сувени́р · самова́р · пода́рок 🎁.
Listen: беру́ таре́лку, беру́ ло́жку, беру́ ка́шу – but беру́ суп, беру́ хлеб. Your hands play – your ear learns the rule. 😄
Ка́шу вари́ла, 🥣
Де́ток корми́ла.
Э́тому дала́,
Э́тому дала́,
Э́тому дала́,
Э́тому дала́,
А э́тому не дала́! 🤭
The white-sided magpie cooked porridge and fed her little ones. She gave some to this one, to this one, to this one, to this one – but not to this one!
A folk rhyme. соро́ка = a magpie (a black-and-white bird), белобо́ка = with white sides. Ка́шу – the same -у as today's rule! Gesture: draw circles on your open palm with one finger (she stirs the porridge) on ВАРИ́ЛА; then bend your fingers one by one on Э́ТОМУ – thumb, pointing finger, middle, ring – and on the last line wiggle your little finger: he got nothing! You can read every word – but you don't have to learn it. Just say it and smile. 😊
Food 1 – чай, молоко́, ка́ша, сыр, хлеб, суп…
Today's ка́ша and суп – say «Хочу́ ка́шу!» Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Food with Richard – Natasha shows Richard the food. Say the word before Richard does! 😄
Today's food words – and «Хочу́ ка́шу!» Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
He wants. I want. – play café: Что вы хоти́те? – Я хочу́ ко́фе, пожа́луйста.
Today's rule: хочу́ во́ду, хочу́ ры́бу – -а → -у. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
You know all 33 letters. Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. ✋
Today's words:
Now whole sentences:
👀 And the proverb of the day:
ДОРОГА́ ЛО́ЖКА К ОБЕ́ДУ.
A spoon is precious at lunchtime.
Richard's soup is on the table, and he has no spoon – Slinky brings one just in time. After lunch nobody needs a spoon! Russians say it when help, a present or a good word comes exactly when it is needed – later it is worth much less. дорога́ = дорога́я (dear, precious – like до́рог in yesterday's proverb) · к обе́ду = for lunch, by lunchtime. English has something close: A friend in need is a friend indeed. Gesture: hold up a spoon on «ло́жка», tap your wrist (it's time!) on «к обе́ду». (Proverb page and mp3 to add.)
Bong! Bong! Lunch! Here is soup. Here is porridge. And here is a plate and a spoon. – Natasha, what's for lunch? – Soup and porridge. What do you want? – I want soup! – And I want porridge! Slinky, what do you want? Fish? – Miaow! – Here is fish. The fish is in the bowl. I take a plate. I take a spoon. I take bread. – Where is my spoon? – Scuffles! No, no, no! Cats don't eat soup! Shoo! – Grrr… – Here is a spoon! – Thank you, Slinky! Slinky, well done! A spoon is precious at lunchtime. Enjoy your meal! Well done! Bye!
- ★ Хочу́ / беру́ / люблю́ + a thing: a word that ends in -а changes to -у: ка́ша → хочу́ ка́шу, таре́лка → беру́ таре́лку.
- Other words stay the same: хочу́ суп, беру́ хлеб, хочу́ чай, беру́ молоко́.
- You heard it on День 5, 10 and 18 – today you see the rule. ★
- Every new word has two links: tap the word to hear it 🔊, tap the picture to open it in the dictionary 📖.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
СУП = soup – the same word, from French soupe. 🍲
БЕРУ́ – an old relative of English bear (to carry). 🐻 No, not the animal! ✋
ОБЕ́Д – the same root as еда́ (food). 🕐
ТАРЕ́ЛКА came through Polish from German Teller (a plate). 🍽️
Russians say: «Щи да ка́ша – пи́ща на́ша» – Cabbage soup and porridge – that's our food! 🥣
Прия́тного аппети́та! = Enjoy your meal! – the French say Bon appétit! 😋
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Heard many times – then a rule in 30 seconds. «Хочу́ ры́бу» was heard on День 5, read on День 10, «Хочу́ матрёшку» on День 18 – today the rule. Learners must first notice a form in what they hear before they can learn it – the noticing hypothesis, Schmidt 1990. Chunks first, rules after (Wray 2002, formulaic language). A short rule after much input works better than a long rule first.
- A gesture that matches the word. A word said with a matching gesture, made by the learner, stays in memory far longer than a word only heard. Study with adults – Macedonia · Knösche 2011 (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig). Watching the gesture helps almost as much as doing it – 7 studies, 309 adults – Oppici et al. 2023.
- Take it with your hands. Total Physical Response – the learner moves while hearing the word – Asher 1969.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- Remember first, then check. Reading alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021. The first minute (yesterday's homework) works the same way.
- 15 minutes a day, not one long lesson. Short daily sessions beat one long one. Study with adults – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better than with a bare translation (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
- Our own method. Natasha's Language Aerobics – tested for many years with her students.
