The loud syllable can change the meaning:
- кольца́ – the voice goes up at the end: «Кольца́ нет!» = the ring is gone (one ring). 🙈
- ко́льца – the voice goes up at the start: «Вот ко́льца!» = here are the rings (many). 💍💍
- And the Ь makes Л soft: коль-цо́ – not «кол-цо́». The tip of your tongue stays behind your teeth.
- 30 seconds, every day. The tongue is a muscle – this is aerobics. 💪

Russians often add the cheeky tail «…а дурако́м помрёшь» – with a smile: however much you learn, there is always more you don't know. Today Scuffles says the tail – she loves sleeping more than learning! ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English uses little words: the ring, of the ring, to the ring, with the ring, on the ring. Russian changes the end: кольцо́, кольца́, кольцу́, кольцо́м, на кольце́. 💍
Old English had cases too – the end of the word changed, like in Russian. Only whom and him are left of them today. 😄
Век живи́ – век учи́сь = Live and learn. The cheeky tail «…а дурако́м помрёшь» is Russian only. 😼
Хр-р-р – a Russian cat snores like this; an English one goes Zzz. 😴
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A review day with no new words. Words met again after a gap of a few days are remembered much better than words met many times in one go. Study with adults – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025; a word met four times over several days was remembered far better than four times in a row (Wegener et al. 2023).
- Six forms side by side. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you meet them together and notice the difference – the noticing hypothesis, Schmidt 1990.
- The ending must carry the meaning. In the tap quiz only the end of the word tells you the answer – structured input (VanPatten · processing instruction).
- Remember first, then check. Reading six days' words alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – 50 classroom experiments – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- The case signs with the hands. You move while you hear the word – Total Physical Response, Asher 1969; a word said with a matching gesture stays in memory far longer – Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The action on the loud syllable. A hand beat on the stressed syllable helps adults pronounce new words. Studies with adults – Prieto's group, Barcelona.
- 15 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long one – Stoltzfus · Sukseemuang 2018.
- The proverb outside the core. Extras inside the core lower learning of the main thing (Mayer, seductive details); an idiom learned with its picture and story is remembered better (Boers 2001).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Nobody corrects the student. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
