Here are all 14 pairs – you know eight of them now (идти́, е́хать, бежа́ть, лете́ть, плыть, нести́, вести́, везти́). The others (ползти́, лезть, брести́, тащи́ть, кати́ть, гнать) open in the dictionary. Today's row is yellow.

💡 The logic · ло́гика
Russian verbs of motion come in pairs. Both verbs are imperfective:
➡️ directed – one direction, one trip, now. Куда́? Отку́да?
🔄 non-directed – there and back, many times, or no direction at all. Где?
➡️ Я иду́ в шко́лу. · ➡️ Ма́ма идёт из магази́на.
🔄 Я хожу́ в шко́лу ка́ждый день. · 🔄 Ко́шка хо́дит по ко́мнате.
✅ Perfective: по- + directed – to set off: Пойдём в кино́!
🚶 subject or object – it moves itself · 🧳 subject with an object – we carry, lead or drive something.
English often has one verb (go, walk); Russian has two – learn them as a pair.

🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Своя́ но́ша не тя́нет.

Your own load is not heavy.
When you carry something for yourself or your family, you don't feel it. «но́ша» – a load, from носи́ть (to carry). 🤸 Gesture: lift a heavy bag… and smile – it's yours!

води́ть – to lead · води́тель – a driver: the one who «leads» the car! 🚗 (Russians say «води́ть маши́ну» – to drive a car)

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

📖 Текст уро́ка · The text – open it only after you can say it without reading

Я несу́ су́мку. – Ма́ма ведёт ребёнка в парк. Ка́ждый день ма́ма во́дит ребёнка в шко́лу. – Я везу́ Ната́шу в магази́н. – Ната́ша меня́ ведёт! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я тебя́ несу́. Веду́ – когда́ ты идёшь сама́. – А тепе́рь Ри́чард меня́ везёт! – Да! Молоде́ц, Ска́ффлз! – Мя́у.

I'm carrying a bag. – Mum is taking the child to the park (by the hand). Every day Mum takes the child to school. – I'm driving Natasha to the shop. – Natasha is leading me! (Scuffles's mistake: she is in Natasha's arms) – No, Scuffles! I'm carrying you. «Веду́» – when you walk yourself. – And now Richard is driving me! – Yes! Well done, Scuffles! – Miaow.

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • ★ 14 pairs – ➡️ directed / 🔄 non-directed, both impf.
  • 👜 нести́ (несу́, несёшь · нёс, несла́) / носи́ть (ношу́, но́сишь)
  • 🤝 вести́ (веду́, ведёшь · вёл, вела́) / води́ть (вожу́, во́дишь)
  • 🚗 везти́ (везу́, везёшь · вёз, везла́) / вози́ть (вожу́, во́зишь)
  • Who or what? – the «what» form: су́мку, Ната́шу, ребёнка (a person, «he»).
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

English take does everything: take a bag, take a child to school, take somebody by car. Russian asks how: in your hands 👜 нести́, by the hand 🤝 вести́, by car 🚗 везти́. And the bus driver is a води́тель – the one who «leads» it! 🚌

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • The rule after eight pairs. Five days of single pairs (День 9–14), then the ★ overview – rule after experience, as in Курс 1 and 2.
  • Natasha's table. All 14 pairs in one picture are Natalia Brown's logic, shown with her credit; the rows not yet met are only for looking.
  • Three gestures for three verbs. 👜 🤝 🚗 keep нести́ – вести́ – везти́ apart, though they sound alike: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
  • The cat gets it right! After her mistake, Scuffles says «Ри́чард меня́ везёт!» – correct. Even Scuffles learns. 🎉
